He moved like nightfall, flowing silently and inexorably over the land.
Many compared him to a stain rather than a shadow, an indelible
flaw, just as silent, but less natural and more unwanted. Had he
cared about their opinion, it might have wounded his feelings.
The prey he sought that day was different than usual: he had no
intention of killing her.

“Enter,” came the softly spoken command when he approached her door
but had yet to touch the knob or raise his hand to knock in an exhibition of
polite manners he seldom had cause or inclination to use.
He obeyed and flowed through the opening, long, dark cloak swirling
about his legs and mingling with the shadows inside the oracle’s cozy,
dimly lit domicile. She sat by the fire, purest white tresses illuminated by
the orange light of the flames on her humble hearth. She wore the colors of
earth and sky, browns and greens mixing with pale blue. Gold glinted at her
throat, not the intricately fashioned band of a Second House fae, but a
simple chain from which an iridescent white pendant dangled.
“Be seated,” she commanded in that same soft tone. She spoke as one
who had no need to raise her voice. She was certain of her authority and
none dared gainsay it, for she was the Archivist’s older sister and the oracle
for all fae.

His boots made no sound as he crossed the flagstone floor. He sat on the
simple wooden stool next to the hearth and faced her. She met his gaze with
iridescent white eyes that matched the egg-sized pendant resting against her
sternum. She raised her left hand and touched the forefinger to the stone. A
gentle glow emanated from the stone, bathing her hand like a mist, but with
even less substance.

“Speak,” she commanded.
He bowed his head and said, “My gratitude for your audience, lady.”
She waved her right hand in languid dismissal of his obligatory
expression of thanks. “No one comes to me just to visit, so give voice to
your request.” Her lips curled in a faint smile and she added, “You only get
one.”
He took a deep breath and admitted in a low whisper, “I’m lonely.”
She nodded and said nothing.
“Time weighs upon me.”

She nodded and said nothing.
“’Tis said every fae has a mate.” He took a breath and paused, watching
her for any flicker of expression that might betray her thoughts. He saw
none. “I seek mine.”
She gave him nothing, not a word, not a twitch.
He took another breath and gave voice to his request: “When and where
shall I find her?”
