I can’t believe I’m actually on a date with a real live man.
Me, the girl who never gets asked out on dates.
Okay, yes, technically tonight is a blind date, which means this guy
—his name is Tom and he’s a vet tech—didn’t voluntarily ask me out.
It’s still a date. Even if I had to get someone else to arrange it.
And since that someone was my friend Kenzie, there’s a decent chance
intimidation and coercion played a role in said arrangement. Possibly also
threats of bodily harm. I wouldn’t put it past her.
I don’t care. That’s how desperate I am to break this losing streak that’s
been hanging over my head my entire adult life. I don’t know what it is about
me, but I seem to be invisible to men.
Not literally. They don’t walk into me as if I’m not there.
I’m romantically invisible. A sexual null space, that’s me. I’m everyone’s
pal Casey. Ozzy’s younger sister Casey. Mayor Goodrich’s Goody-TwoShoes daughter Casey. Quiet, helpful, straight-A student Casey. Everybody
loves me, but no one’s ever fallen in love with me.
I’ve never had a single boyfriend. Not unless you count Seth Bumgarner,
who invited me over to watch movies in his rec room in tenth grade, tried to
shove my hand down his pants, and never spoke to me again after I said no.
He was both my first and my last kiss. That’s not a dry spell, that’s the
freaking Dust Bowl.
It’s not as if I’ve been holding out for anything or anyone in particular.
I’m not asking to find true love. I just want someone to like me enough to
kiss me. And then take me to bed so I can rid myself of this virginity
albatross around my neck.
Is that so much to ask? Everyone else I know is having sex. Why can’t I?
I’m half convinced Seth Bumgarner put a curse on me for refusing to
touch his penis, and now I’m sexual Kryptonite. As soon as men get near me,
their sex drives wither and die.
But maybe tonight’s the night I break the curse. Maybe I’ll get lucky
enough to get lucky finally. I don’t want to get my hopes up, but I’m feeling
cautiously optimistic.
Across the wooden picnic table from me, Tom’s knee bounces up and
down, rippling the surfaces of our beers. I think he might be nervous. But so
am I. I can’t fault him for that.
He’s got freckles and short dark hair that’s receding before its time. It’s
an odd combination that makes him look a little like a kid playing dress-up in
an old man wig, but I’ve decided to find it charming. Frankly, I’m relieved
he’s not too handsome. He’s not so hot that it’s intimidating, which is good.
