Knives and Avocado Toast

10 years later
SERENA
The curtains of my bedroom windows were yanked open and I groaned as
light poured in, disrupting my dark cave. I squinted, opening one eye and
glaring at the man who dared to wake me up this way.
Luca ignored me, as always. His back to me, his broad shoulders casting
a long shadow. I could see a line of sweat down his shirt, which meant he’d
already gone on his morning run and done gods knew what else before the
sun rose.

“I want to sleep in,” I hissed. “My head hurts.” It was true. My head felt
like someone was taking an ice pick to it and the beams of light weren’t
helping.

I grabbed the blankets and pulled them over my head, hiding myself in
the mound of warmth. Closing my eyes, I let out a soft sigh.
“No, no,” Luca chided. “I don’t think so.”
I felt a hand grip the blankets and yelped as he tried to tear them off the
bed. I held them tight to my body, ensuring he couldn’t see me, and let out a
fierce hiss.

“I’m naked! And my head hurts!”
“Then don’t drink so much wine,” he quipped. He threw a blanket back
at me, the corner of his mouth almost tugging into a smile. He was freshly
shaved, his sharp jaw and high cheekbones now visible. Even sweaty, he
was sexy. He had soft dark brown hair that curled around his ears and
muscles for days. For weeks. For years. “Breakfast is ready, piccola
regina.”

I blindly reached for a pillow and chucked it at him, but it landed on the
floor in front of his feet. Hot or not, he annoyed the fuck out of me. I glared
for a few moments, then craned my neck, looking at the alarm clock.
“It’s not even seven,” I protested. “Luca,” I moaned.
“Up,” Luca growled. “You’re being lazy. You have training to do and
your breakfast is getting cold.”
He left before I could argue any further, pulling the door shut behind
him.

I sighed, staring at the ceiling for a moment and gathering the willpower
to go downstairs.
This had been my home for ten years now. Or prison, depending on how
you looked at it. My husband, who I had only seen once in the last five
years, was never here. Instead, it was just me, Luca, and the countless
bodyguards and men that belonged to the Colchian mafia.
Ian kept this place locked down like a fortress. There were cameras
everywhere, which I was certain he liked to look at. Spying on his obedient
Italian wife.

“Serena!” Luca called, his tone dangerously close to true frustration.
A string of curses flew from my tongue, but I pushed the sheet back and
dragged myself out of bed. I went to my bathroom and changed quickly—
pulling on high-waisted palazzo pants and a cropped silk shirt.
I pulled my dark hair back into a bun and glanced at my wedding ring
atop a black tray next to the sink.
