“Can you believe our agency got that project?” gushes Lori, my
coworker, as she pours coffee into her Definitely Not Vodka mug.
“What an amazing opportunity.”
“I know,” says Stella. “Oh, God. Someone brought in donuts. Waverly, will
you split one with me?”
The three of us are standing in the break room, fresh out of our weekly
Friday project manager meeting. Lori and Stella aren’t the kind of women
who would typically befriend me outside of the office—they’re both super
cool and outspoken, while I’m quiet and never feel like I look put together
no matter how hard I try—but somehow we’ve become a trio at work.
“I’m good, thanks,” I say to Stella, even though a donut sounds delicious
right now. “I’m trying to cut back on sugar.”
“Well, that’s no fun,” says Stella.
“Diets never work,” says Lori, splashing cream into her coffee mug. “I
would know. I’ve tried them all. And I always gain back the weight.”
“Same,” says Stella as she bites into a chocolate donut.
Neither Lori nor Stella know what it’s like to always be the biggest woman
in the room. Or what it’s like to constantly see judgment in other people’s
eyes. That’s the main reason why I want to lose weight. I just want people
to stop defining me—and dismissing me—because of the way I look.
“Who do you guys think Alex will give the new project to?” I ask. Alex is
our boss, and also the most attractive man I’ve ever met in my life. I’m
pretty sure all the women in the building—and probably a few men—have
secret crushes on him. Alex is a six-foot-four, chisel-jawed, gorgeous-eyed,
impeccably dressed stunner of a man. Nobody knows anything about his
personal life, but that mysteriousness makes him even more attractive.
“I don’t know, but whoever gets it, it’s going to be a big deal for them,”
says Lori.
Our agency was just hired to execute a big launch of a really cool new
product: an audiobook player that lets users choose from hundreds of
celebrity narrators. There are more than a dozen project managers at our
agency, most of whom have been here longer than I have, so I know the
odds aren’t great that I’ll be picked to work on the project. A girl can dream,
though. I might be quiet, but I’ve put my all into everything I’ve worked on
since I was hired.
“We probably won’t find out until Monday,” says Stella, brushing donut
crumbs off her hands. “Alex always takes forever to decide.”
“It’s called being thoughtful,” says Lori. “It’s what makes him a good
leader.”
Stella laughs. “Jeez. Don’t get offended.”
“I’m not offended,” says Lori defensively. “I’m just making a statement.”
“Anywayyyy,” says Stella. “Speaking of the weekend, do either of you have
any fun plans? Waverly?”
