I SNATCHED THE BRIDE’S flying bouquet out of mid-air inches from
Oscar’s plate. This was why I got paid the big bucks. Not literally to catch
things, but to control a crisis before it could wreak havoc on a politician’s
chance to get elected.

Historically, I performed my miracles on a much larger stage than at a
wedding reception in Elmer, Texas. But a win was a win, and I’d take this
one. Selling Oscar Ferguson to Elmer was a hard enough task as it was.
“Smile, clap, and try to act like you’re having fun,” I growled under my
breath to Oscar, who looked up from his cell phone at the bunch of daisies I
held inches above his untouched slice of cake.

“Nice catch!” The DJ’s amplified voice encouraged a round of applause
to swell and a few shouts of “way to go” from the wedding crowd.
I stood and dug down, looking for the well of calm that lived deep in the
center of me. Nothing about the next five minutes of my life would be
pleasant. In fact, I was sure in the ranking of shitty, uncomfortable things
that had happened to me in the last forty-nine years, this was about to hit
the top ten. Maybe the top five.

All of it depended on Jude Morgan. He’d caught the garter and waited on
the dance floor for the lucky lady who caught the bouquet.
I was so fucked.

He and I had history. Hopefully, time had healed the wounds I’d inflicted
enough that he and I could take part in this arcane wedding ritual like
rational adults. I made my way to the edge of the stage at the front of Blue
Star Wines’ tasting room and set the bouquet at the DJ’s feet.
“That was a heck of a catch.” Wanda, the bride, kneeled from her spot on
the stage and retrieved her flowers.
“You’ve got an impressive arm.” It was astonishing she’d hurled the
bouquet that far.

Oscar and I were seated at the worst table in the room. It was the farthest
from everything, including the dance floor. Seriously, every wedding had
this table, and it didn’t take a genius to figure out when you were seated at
it. A pair of out-of-town cousins no one liked. Wanda’s next-door neighbors,
who had to be over a hundred years old and had slept through the meal. A
goth-looking couple in their twenties that hadn’t said a word. And us. Worst
table in the room.

“Thanks, honey.” Wanda winked and jutted her chin at someone behind
me. The glee in her twinkling eyes was totally misplaced. This was not a
matchmaking moment.

A bad feeling slithered up my spine. I’d lingered too long, and I’d not get
out of this unscathed. The unpleasantness started now. I could feel Jude’s
eyes on me. If I hurried, maybe I could still escape.
“Now it’s time for our new couple to share a dance.” The DJ put on Eric
Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight.”
