Joker

Four years later
The prison gates clanked open, assaulting my ears with the harsh
sound of freedom. My heart pounded as I stepped across the threshold. I
was free. Breathing in, even the air seemed different out here. It had been
nearly two decades since I’d been on this side of the bars.

I strode quickly to the parking lot, desperate to put distance between
myself and this godforsaken place. My ride was waiting — a gleaming
Harley Fat Boy, all sleek lines and rumbling power a gift from my club. At
least, according to the note I’d been given with the key. The guard had
seemed reluctant to hand it over. I’d thought the club had turned away from
me, but maybe I’d been wrong. I swung my leg over the leather seat,
gripping the handlebars with white knuckles. The engine roared to life
beneath me, drowning out the chaos in my head.

I peeled out of the lot, the wind whipping against my face. Miles of
open road stretched before me as I gunned the throttle, the Harley eating up
the asphalt. I flew past trees and fields, the prison shrinking away in my
rearview. Out here, I was untethered, unconfined. A man with no walls or
bars to hold me back. No more guards. No schedules. I could do whatever
the fuck I wanted.

My mind turned to the clubhouse. I wondered if the brothers would
welcome me back with open arms or closed fists. I’d find out soon enough.
The Dixie Reapers were my blood. As the clubhouse came into view, I
steeled myself. I was back, and I had no idea what to expect.

I rolled the Harley to a stop outside the compound gates. A Prospect
came closer, one I’d never met before. He eyed me, then saw the cut over
my shoulders and he froze. Without a word, he threw open the gate and let
me through. Even if no one had told him I was arriving today, it seemed he
knew my name.

Home, sweet home.
I scanned the parking lot, taking in the line of choppers. It looked
like quite a few of my brothers were inside. I pulled up to the clubhouse and
parked, killing the engine. I’d barely had a chance to get off the bike when
the doors flew open and Tank stormed out, his hulking frame rippling with
tension. Neither of us were young anymore, but he still looked like he could
break a man in half.

“Well, look who finally decided to show his face,” he growled.
Behind him, Venom, Bull, and a few others gathered on the porch, watching
me with narrowed eyes.

I met Tank’s glare and held it. I wouldn’t be intimidated, not on my
home turf. If they hadn’t wanted me here, then they shouldn’t have left the
Harley for me at the prison. Or at least included a note that said to never
darken their doorstep again.

“Time away gives a man perspective,” I said evenly.
Tank’s lip curled in a sneer.
