I BANG MY PALMS on the steering wheel as I turn onto the freeway. Well,
that was fucking disastrous. When my business partners informed me I had
to meet with a potential investor, I was less than thrilled. I’m not the money
guy. I’m the sit on your ass and play video games all day guy.
Trent, Billy and I met at college. We were all enrolled in the same
computer science program. Trent is the money guy, Billy is the
programmer, and I’m the game designer. In our final year of college, we
developed our first video game, called House of Arrows. The game released
and did pretty well for itself, including developing a small cult following. It
performed well enough that creating a House of Arrows 2 is a real
possibility. But in order to do that, we need more money, and Mr.
Withermore is our way to get it… as long as I didn’t just fuck it up.
I’m the last person they should’ve sent to meet with him. What were they
thinking?
Trent and Billy are based out of Boston, while I remained at home in
Camden, Maine. My friends are here. Plus, it’s obvious from tonight’s
events that my social skills are shit. I’ve always been stronger in smaller
group settings, so staying close to home works well for me.
Trent is the one who was supposed to meet with Mr. Withermore, but no,
Trent’s sister just happens to be getting married this weekend so he couldn’t
make it. And Mr. Withermore just so happens to live near Camden, and
since I’m closest, that left me as tribute.
I get it, when the guy with the money wants to meet, you meet. I just wish
it wasn’t with me.
We prepared well, or so I thought. Trent had done all the research on Mr.
Withermore, and gave me the cliff notes version when he emailed over all
the game stats for House of Arrows. The intention was to show Mr.
Withermore how well it performed, so he would be more inclined to invest.
Everything was going great. The sales of the previous game impressed
him and he was interested, but I had to go and stick my foot in my mouth.
Trent mentioned that Mr. Withermore was a family man, so when he
veered the conversation towards family, I panicked. I’m the last person who
would fucking know anything about family.
Well… now I have an imaginary fiancé and I’m expected to bring him to
a fundraiser that Harper Studios, that’s us, was invited to by Mr.
Withermore in a couple weeks. Fuck my life!
I suppose I could ask anyone to be my fake fiancé. My best friend
Spencer could do it. I’m sure he’s read enough of the fake fiancé trope in
his romance novels to be an expert by now.
Errr, wait. Now that I think about it, that might not be the best idea. Just
last week, Finn, his boyfriend, full on growled when Dom complimented
Spencer on his makeup. And Dom is an intimidating man, pure muscle,
standing well over 6 feet tall.
