The Only Difference Between Martyrdom
and Suicide is Press Coverage

Remi

“Come outside. I finally got my car back, so we’re going… I don’t know.
Somewhere,” I laugh, pulling into my best friend’s driveway. “I’m tired of
being a passenger.”
Mila dances her way to the door in excitement for me. “Fuck yes. God, I
can’t even believe you hit that guy.”

My face falls as I make a show of hanging up my phone, then flip her
off as she gets in. “Very funny,” I deadpan. “Didn’t I tell you that the topic
of Jagger Saint Diaz is off limits until the end of time? I’m already going to
be paying for his bullshit pain and suffering until I’m fifty.”
“You did, but come on, Remi. You have to talk about it with someone,
and who better than me? Court’s over now. Air it all out.”

I wish I could, but that’s a sure-fire way to send me into a rage spiral.
No one needs that. Valentine’s Day was arguably the worst night of my life
and I’ve already had to relive enough of it to the cops, the insurance
adjusters, and the judge who decided Princess Diaz was not only innocent,
but suffered damages far beyond physical and property. That smug little shit
had her eating out of the palm of his hand, broken pinky and all.
God, I wish I could hit him again just on principle.

“Look, I don’t care what anyone says. The real cause of that accident
wasn’t me, it was Eddy. If that prick hadn’t ditched me on Valentine’s Day
to fuck his third cousin, I wouldn’t have been driving down the road having
a psychotic break,” I say flippantly. “He should be the one in debt for the
next twenty years, not me.”

“I agree.” She gives me an apologetic expression. “Fucking asshole. Are
all men assholes? Seriously, where the hell are the good ones hiding?”
“Usually either in gay bars or week-long Dungeons and Dragons
campaigns. Either way, they won’t find us.”
“Ugh, the nerds. We need to find them. Did you see that TikTok about
nerd guys? Let me see if I can find it.”

Leaving her to it, I crank up the music and roll the window down to get
some fresh air. I hate the fact that I feel nervous driving now, like if I take
my eyes off the road for a second, I’ll slam into some other dumbass on a
motorcycle and end up in jail this time — but I’m done letting him control
my life. I’ve got my car back after months of not being able to afford the
repairs, my life in order, and not a single destination in mind.
Life is good.

“Oh fuck,” she hisses. Her hand flies to her mouth as she stares down at
her phone with wide, unblinking eyes. “Remi.”
“What? Did one of the nerds do a thirst trap again? Those always suck
me in. It’s a problem,” I laugh.
