“Shot, shot, shot . . .”
I glare at Taylor before licking my hand and pouring on the salt. You
can’t do a tequila shot without salt and lemon. Taylor gives me his signature
smile—dimple and all—before bumping my shoulder.
He’s been a bad influence tonight, which, considering he can’t drink yet,
is concerning. But spending the night sitting at Grumpy’s Bar with Taylor
and Grayson is exactly where I want to be for the rest of my eighteenth
birthday.
Mum and Dad were here earlier, but they left to take my sisters home to
bed after a nice family dinner. However, it’s Friday night and Grumpy’s is
busier than usual. Since I’m legally allowed to drink, we figured Grumpy’s
was the safest place to be, especially as Ella is here too. She lives next door
to us, and Mum and Dad trust she will get us home safely.
Grayson taps me on the shoulder and nods at the shot.
Right.
Tequila.
Picking up the glass of clear liquid, I tip it to Grayson, lick the salt,
down the shot, then push the wedge of lemon into my mouth. I don’t know
what’s worse—the tequila or the lemon. Tequila is Grayson’s choice,
something about it having less sugar than the girlie drinks.
You eat and drink more healthily—most of the time—when your besties
play basketball. Even in the off season, Grayson is always trying new kaleflavoured crap. Kale is stupid. It doesn’t matter how many times he tries to
make me eat it, I’m never going to like it.
The pressure in my bladder increases. Damn shots. I stand and all three
of our watches beep. Grayson holds me upright and Taylor moves in front
of me and starts talking, but all the blood’s rushed to my head and my ears
are ringing. I feel dizzy and I focus hard on my breathing. I don’t want to
faint.
I hate that this happens, but I’m thankful the boys know what to do. To
most of the people in the bar, I probably just look drunk. But that is not the
case.
I have a condition.
I have been receiving treatment for a while now; however, outside of the
family, no one knows. We’ve managed to keep it quiet, but both Grayson
and Taylor know, and they found someone who would link our fitness
watches. It means that when I’m not around, they will know when my heart
rate increases too high.
I was angry at first. Then I nearly passed out at the library one day, and I
was thankful they were alerted and could find me.
As my head clears, I can hear the boys talking to Logan behind the bar.
“She’s all good. She just got up too quickly,” Grayson tells him.
“Are you sure?” Logan’s voice sounds uncertain.
Grayson allows my body to turn in his arms, so I’m facing the bar.
“I’m all right. This just happens sometimes.” I keep my voice calm, so
Logan doesn’t worry.
