“Oh, my God, Mommy! What’s taking Emmy so longggg? I have to
pee,” my daughter whined with an annoyed look on her face as we
stood outside my big cousin Emilia’s home, waiting for her to open the
door.
My ass probably should have called before coming over, but the way I
saw it, I was just trying to pop up and surprise everyone. Now that I’d
thought a little deeper into the shit, I knew damn well that I wouldn’t have
liked it if somebody just popped their ass up at my house unannounced,
especially on a weekend when a bitch loved to sleep in late.
“Knock again. I asked you when we were at the airport if you needed to
use the restroom, and you told me no,” I fussed at my daughter, who walked
a little closer to the door, so she could knock once more.
She banged on the door, aggressive as hell, causing me to laugh and
move her ass out of the way. I knew Emilia. Her ass would be pissed the
second she got to the door, saying that we were banging on the door like the
damn police. With her living in a three-story townhome and being a little
over seven months pregnant, I was sure she was just moving a little slower
than usual. That’s probably why she was taking so long to come down.
Even though I ran my ass away from Atlanta, wanting a new start in
Miami, I’m not going to lie; it felt so damn good to be back in my stomping
grounds. Atlanta is the city that raised and made me, so it will always be
home for me, no matter the bipolar bond that I had with this city.
The second I landed at the airport, I had an Uber come to pick me and
my daughter up, and we were dropped off at my dad’s house. I even
surprised him, and he was happy as hell to see me. My tough ass almost
started crying when he opened the door and lifted me in his arms, telling me
how much he missed me. My papi was my guy. When I lived in Atlanta, he
and I would spend so much time together. His practice was about ten
minutes away from the high rise that I used to live in, so there were many
days when I would pull up on him during his break hours with food and just
kick it with my favorite guy. He was a man, and you know how men loved
to disconnect from their feelings and never really liked to show too much
emotion.
