“I THINK IT’S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT YOU DO THIS, SOPHIE,” THE GUIDANCE
counselor said in a sugary sweet voice that made me feel slightly nauseous. “I
know things didn’t go completely as anticipated for you, but perhaps this will
give you something you can be proud of.”

“That’s the understatement of the century,” I muttered, as I twirled a
piece of my bleached blonde hair around my finger and fixed my clear green
eyes on the woman in front of me. I’d been around people like this for the
past five years. Everyone tried to claim that they were there to help me but
really, they were just there to claim a piece of my fame. And ultimately that
had been my downfall.

It was no surprise to those closest to me that I’d been “discovered.” A lot
of people had expected it to happen sooner than it did. But the right person
had finally seen my strong singing voice and previously upbeat attitude
during my senior year of college.

My rise to fame had been swift—and so had my fall. I shook my head
slightly, berating myself for falling back into the trap of reliving everything
that had happened to me in the past year. I very much wanted to keep that
behind me.

But it was my past that led me back to this office. At twenty-seven years
old, I was a washed-up pop star with one semester of college left to obtain
my degree. How fabulous.

“Well, I believe in you,” the counselor said, trying to regain my attention.
I rolled my eyes at the rather plain-looking woman. Her somewhat messy
brown hair and equally brown dress annoyed me. I didn’t believe what she
said for a second. I wasn’t worth believing in, anymore. “Great,” I said in a
bored tone. “Let’s just get this over with. How do I get signed up for
classes?”
The counselor’s face brightened and I internally groaned at my current
situation.

Two hours later and I left the stifling little office with a complete
schedule of classes and an accompanying headache. I squinted my eyes
against the setting winter sun, before pulling my coat up and around my
shoulders. I shivered at the crisp air, feeling slightly annoyed that I was back
in Washington D.C. after living in Los Angeles weather for the past five
years.

I pulled out my phone to check the time and sighed. It was only the early
afternoon and I had absolutely nothing planned for the rest of the day. Having
unstructured time was a huge change and I didn’t know quite what to do with
it.
