Belle Glade, Florida was spread beneath a growing curtain of
smoke, though the persistent sun stabbed its narrow rays
through the gaps here and there. Jacob sat at the picnic table in
the backyard of his parents’ Florida home, a house he’d never
once been to while they were alive.
Jacob still struggled thinking about his parents in the past
tense. Even with the challenges of their relationship over the
years, the fact that they were gone was some sort of obscure
concept, not grounded in reality. He hadn’t spoken to them
much over the past few years, but they were still always there,
some omnipresent force lingering in the back of his mind.
He wasn’t sad, and in a way, he hated that he wasn’t sad;
however, there was still a lingering void, the absence of
something that had existed, his whole life. Sad or not, that was
enough to set his world askew. Jacob separated the gear on the
picnic table, drawing the collapsible solar panels away from
the central radio. Gently, he unfolded the panels, spreading
them out to increase their surface area. They gleamed gently in
the low morning light, and even shrouded by clouds, the sun
fed power to the panels as it was supposed to.
The battery plugged into the portable solar panels showed
a decent charge, and Jacob set the portable radio on the
wooden surface next to it, plugging the power into the solar
battery. Pat McDonnell, the owner of the Neutral Territory
tavern back in West Virginia, had given him the radio so he
could stay in touch while on the road. It had been a few days
