Kenny
A year and a half later…
“Daddy, got’chu, lil man.”
Kendrick had been crying almost non-stop. He was one year old, and
he’d been in my custody for about four months. I believed he still missed
his mama and had his moments. Tasha was a cold-ass bitch, though, and I
hated I got caught up with her ass. I’d taken her to court to get full custody
of him. When I went to her place to get him, she had shit everywhere. My
son didn’t need to be in that nasty ass environment. What was I thinking,
fucking with her?

Just as I was walking around with him, the doorbell rang. I didn’t know
who it was, but I could use any help I could get. When I went to the door,
Tiffany and Ryder stood there. They’d just gotten back from their
honeymoon. We’d witnessed Tiffany win a national title for bare backing at
the NFR and right after, they’d gon’ to one of those Vegas chapels and
scheduled a nice ass wedding. They’d been engaged for over a year and
hadn’t spoken of a wedding date because Tiffany was so involved with
making it to the finals.

Tiffany immediately took Kendrick from me and he stopped crying. I
rolled my eyes and offered them a seat. “Hey, Kenny. Seems like you’re
having a rough time.”
“Seems? Ray Charles could see I was having a hard time and he’s blind
and dead.”

She chuckled as Ryder shook my hand. “When did y’all get back?”
“Yesterday,” Tiff said as Kendrick laid on her, content as hell. “Maybe
he just needed a woman’s touch. Or it could be because I’m pregnant.”
I shrugged my shoulders, then wiped my hand down my face. Before I
could offer them something to drink, my cell phone started ringing.
“Hello?”

“Hey, Kendrall. Karima is sick, so they won’t be able to make the trip.
She’s been throwing up and has a fever.”
Ever since we’d broken up, Keisha had been calling me Kendrall. I
didn’t even care. I still loved her, and nothing would change that. “I hate to
hear she’s not feeling well. Is she up to talking?”
“She’s asleep, but KJ is standing right here if you wanna talk to him.”
“Yeah, please.”

“Hey, Dad.”
“Hey, son. How’s it going?”
“It’s going. I hate we can’t come to Nome. Can you come to see us
instead?”

“Let me talk to your mother.”
I already knew this was gonna be a no go. Keisha had officially moved
on with her life. She’d been dating this guy for about six months now, and
the kids seemed to like him. The problem was that she never wanted to see
me. So, the kids always had to fly to me. If they couldn’t come for whatever
reason, then I wouldn’t see them. One time, I’d flown out there and she
wouldn’t open the door. I was so pissed; I went to that grocery store we met
at and just sat in the parking lot for hours.
