I adjusted my position on the cramped front seat of Bas’s truck. My
left butt cheek felt like knives were stabbing through it. The drive
from London seemed to take forever when the four of us were stuffed on the
bench seat like sardines in a can. The discomfort had nothing to do with my
age and everything to do with sitting in an awkward position for over an
hour.
Despite the fatigue, I was buzzing with energy. “I can hardly believe we
killed the Dark One. Life’s going to be boring now, I just know it.”
Aislinn laughed in the backseat. “That’s not possible. We’ve been
appointed the new detectives in Cottlehill which will keep us plenty busy. On
top of that we are also hunters for Artemis.
We will be busier than ever.”
Millie gasped and turned her head to look at me. Given that she was
crammed between me and Violet on the front seat meant her nose was mere
millimeters from my face. “I can’t believe we were saved by royalty. Now I
see how you beat the Dark One. She was so powerful. I didn’t think it was
possible to eliminate her.”
I bristled at the insinuation we weren’t enough without Artemis making
us hunters. Violet snorted on the other side of Millie. “The only thing joining
Artemis’s army did for us was give us more speed and physical strength. We
haven’t had the special powers she gave us long enough to use them.
Regardless, what we did in there was one hundred percent Backside of
Forty.” I was glad Violet corrected her. I might have actually bitten her head
off.
We’d spent a year of our lives, putting ourselves on the line, to fight
against the Dark One and take down her empire piece by piece. If we hadn’t
robbed her of power and minions at various points, we might not have been
able to win this one. Knowing that made me realize I would live every
agonizing minute again if it came down to it. Every cut, bruise, and
concussion had made it possible to kill the evil bitch.
Millie’s eyes widened. “I never meant to offend you guys. You three do
things most of us couldn’t even fathom. I am nothing but appreciative. I
know everyone else back there, waiting with Isidora and Camille for rides,
feel the same way. I was certain I was going to die. I don’t know how you
managed to stand upright, let alone fight against the Dark energy.”
