CLEMENTINE
TEARS BRIM MY EYES, cascading slowly down my cheeks.
I want to believe that the world isn’t crashing down on me.
It feels worse. Much worse.
How would anyone feel about their one shot at getting out of this damn
town, this damn country, being pulled from their reach? It’s anxietyinducing, and I hate that it’s become my reality.
“Honey, are you there?” my mom’s voice comes through the phone
that’s still clutched tightly in my hand. I blink a few times before taking a
deep breath and bringing it back to my ear.
“Yeah, I’m here.”
She sighs on the other end. “I’m sorry.”
It’s not her fault; it’s not really anyone’s fault. I want to scream at her,
sure, but she doesn’t deserve it.
“I can’t stay home?” I ask again, knowing the answer.
She’s quiet for a moment. “No, honey. I already told your Tía that she
can stay there with her family.”
My eyes shut tightly, and I find myself latching my free hand onto my
bare thigh. My nails dig into the skin, leaving marks–soon to draw blood.
She’s still talking, but I’ve tuned her out. The pain distracts me for as long
as I can take before I need to clean an open wound.
Feeding into this vice is the only way to stop my thoughts from
spiraling. I have nowhere to stay—that’s my predicament.
The study abroad program at my university canceled at the last minute
with their plans to go to Greece. It was going to be three months of
sunshine, beautiful landscapes, all the food, and the best time with my best
friend, Rosa. That was rare at Frontier University, and I got accepted. I’d be
able to finish quite a few credits while there, which was the main appeal for
me.
Going to Greece was just the cherry on top.
My mom has been to Greece four times now that she’s remarried after
Dad died. She loved it so much that she wanted to make another trip out to
see me while she and my stepdad traveled Europe this summer. It would be
nice to also see him again, I won’t lie. I’ve only seen him on holidays when
I travel back home to Maryland. He moved us into this nice lake house once
he married my mom when I was fifteen.
College kept me busy to the point where I didn’t even have time to go
home for the summer. The first summer, I volunteered at an animal shelter,
and they gladly paid for summer campus housing. The second summer, I
worked at the University for their new student orientation program, and it
allowed me to stay on campus for free. Now, this third and final summer
before senior year, I don’t have anywhere to go.
