Portia Flemming walked down the long hallway of Hellscape Holiday
Resort, Lucifer’s pet project but her baby. Her very own place to
manage. A place where people gathered. A place where there was joy
and laughter, love and passion.
It was paradise, all right.
It was the kind of paradise that fit Portia’s resort clientele down to the
very last vampire fang and freshly brushed lion’s mane. Shifters, demons,
witches, and vampires, all kinds of paranormal beings visited Hellscape for a
slice of relaxation.
“Oh!” Una cried from behind the reception desk. The pixie’s wings
flapped over and over again until she hovered over the ground. Her usual
complexion was bright red with frustration.
Portia glided over, wearing her best smile. “Una, darling, may I be of
assistance?”
The pixie sighed in relief. “Yes, please. This demon says he doesn’t want
to share a floor with a coven of witches.”
Portia was used to this. Some demons hated witches just like some
witches hated shifters. There was a whole lot of hate out there, but not in
here. Not in her place. “Is your room to your satisfaction?” Portia asked the
disgruntled demon.
“No, it reeks of witches.”
“Hmm.” Portia forced a smile. “I’ll put you on another floor.”
The demon huffed. “Fine.”
“You’re welcome,” she said, even though he forgot to be polite. “Una,
would you please inform the witches they have been randomly selected for an
upgrade? Move them to the private cabanas. The red ones.”
Una gasped. “Wow. They’ll be thrilled.”
Portia tapped the demon’s cheek despite the fact he towered over her.
“Next time you want to be intolerant of other creatures, make sure it’s not in
my house. Have a wonderful stay.”
She walked away, pleased with the way she handled it. Portia made her
way to her office and was shocked to find Lou, the bartender, draped on the
couch, watching the wall of security screens. As always, there was a snack in
one hand and a drink in the other.
“What are you doing?”
Lou didn’t even look up, but he did munch on what looked like an
enormous cheeseburger. “Mmm,” he moaned.
Portia waited for him to finish his bite before asking, “Why are you in my
office again, Lou? Don’t you have your own job here?”
“I do, but sometimes a couple is just too delicious to not watch. When
they leave the bar, I like to come here and see what they do next.”
“In other words, my dear cousin, you’re admitting you’re a peeping
Tom.”
He threw his head back with a laugh. “Of course I am. I’m a demon. It’s
what I do. Messing with other people’s lives is what I live for.”
“You said that about other things before.”
“Portia, can’t a demon change his mind every once in a while?”
“He can,” she replied with a grin. “But you’re not just any regular demon.
You know, messing with people’s lives isn’t allowed. That’s why you have
me. That’s why we built this hotel.”
“I know, I know, but it was so good. They instantly connected over some
hilarious coincidence, and they were talking about snorkeling together before
I could even send them drinks.”
Portia looked at the screen, but there was no water scene on the monitors.
