I asper
Eight months later…
“MAN, quit tripping. You know you ready to get married. It was your idea
for you and Aspen to come to this courthouse and get married today. Ain’t
nobody twisted your arm or no shit like that. So, get it together.”
“You right. I’m just nervous as fuck. After talking to Zayson about their
wedding next month, and getting fitted for my tux and all that bullshit, I
knew that if Aspen was cool with it, we could just do this shit spur of the
moment. Nothing fancy.”

“Well, she obviously shocked the fuck outta you when she said yes.”
“Hell yeah,” Storm said and chuckled. “My lil bougie baby said she
would marry me outside in the barn. She didn’t give a damn where it was or
how fancy, the end result would still be the same.”

“That’s what’s up, bruh.”
“So, when you and Chasity gon’ come down this road?”
They all thought Chasity was my girlfriend, and neither of us corrected
them. We’d been kicking it hard for eight months, but we hadn’t made any
commitments. After we spent that first evening together, I knew she was the
type to want a commitment and longed to be married one day. But she also
peeped that I wasn’t quite ready. Although, she did things to me I couldn’t
describe, the recent events with Trini made me hesitant. Before long, she
was gonna want a baby. That shit was nowhere near my radar. The hurt
from losing two babies was still fresh for me, even though I lost the first
one almost seven years ago now.

People often thought that men weren’t as affected as the woman was if
the baby hadn’t been born yet, but that shit couldn’t be further from the
truth for me. While I didn’t show it, I thought about it a lot, which was why
I didn’t too much care for being alone. But these days, I couldn’t hang
around Storm as much. Aspen was four months pregnant with twins and all
his attention went to her and his business, as it should. Chasity and I hung
together on the weekends, sometimes, but she was in her last semester of
school. Most of our hanging happened because I went to Houston while she
was at work and chilled out at the club.

I’d gotten my liquor license and purchased the liquor store from Ms.
Betty last month. It was undergoing renovations and should be open in a
couple of months. Wrapping myself up in work, scheduling appointments
from sunup to sundown, had kept me busy. As I stared off into space, Storm
pushed me, causing me to stumble. “Nigga! I asked you a question.”
“We haven’t talked about it.”

“You don’t see a future with her?”
“Can you concentrate on you and how you gon’ handle Aspen and two
babies? I hope the twins are girls so they can handle yo’ ass. Everybody
gon’ have to call you Seven when they get ahold of you. Storm gon’
dissipate in the water.”
