Five Years Ago

Haley
I could do it. I would do it. Mind over matter, wasn’t that the saying?
A full garbage bag sat propped against the back door. Why hadn’t I
taken out the misshapen white lump the day before? It hadn’t been so full
then. Wrestling it out of the trash can had been an ordeal on its own. Could
I manage the trek to the dumpster with a bag that heavy?
I had to try. No one would be coming to help.

Once I gathered what remained of my pitiful strength, I hoisted the bag
up and over my shoulder with a groan. It took a moment to pry the back
door open under such a burden, but I managed.
Worn out flip-flops thumped against the hard-packed, parched ground. It
took less than two dozen paces before exhaustion crept in.

Chemo had really taken its toll on my body. According to my doctors, I
should have had someone staying with me to help, but no white knight
would be riding in to sweep me up into his arms and take care of me.
The man I thought was my knight, my best friend, my husband, my soul
mate, turned out to be nothing more than a lying, cheating, soul-destroying
son of a bitch. While I struggled to haul a garbage bag fifty yards to a
dumpster, my soon-to-be ex-husband would have been winding down from
his affair baby’s gender reveal party.

My snake of a sister had been able to give my husband everything he
wanted, everything I tried to give during our twelve years together. He
desperately wanted children. My ovaries had other plans.
And so did other parts of me. Parts I no longer had. I hadn’t been
ashamed of what was missing until I caught my then-husband in bed with
my younger sister. She had a thing for married men and to our parents, she
could do no wrong, but to seduce my husband? A few weeks after my
cancer diagnosis?

When we first heard that awful c-word, my ex told me we were in it
together, that he loved and supported me. We mourned the children we
would never have, but then he went and knocked her up while I recovered
from major surgery.

The second I walked in on them, I left and never looked back. Which
meant I fought through my first and hopefully last round of chemo alone.
My ex had been kind enough to purchase a tiny condo for me, put it in my
name, and excluded it from the divorce settlement out of what I hoped was
overwhelming guilt.

Unable to work due to my ongoing health problems, my shark of a lawyer
added a provision in the divorce paperwork to keep me on my ex’s health
insurance indefinitely. The insurance kept me alive, paid for whatever
treatments I needed, and the generous alimony took care of the rest of the
bills.
