“Let’s go, girls.”
The beginning strains from Shania’s boot-stomping number blared into
the parking lot when the heavy oak doors opened as other patrons left. She
smiled as she strode inside Park Tavern. The local watering hole was a
notch above dive bars, but just barely. Penny loved that song. Anytime she
heard it, the beginning bars made her feel like she could kick down a door.

And boy, did she need it after this week. She was ready to strangle the
next bridezilla who entered her dress shop with a list of demands three
miles wide that no one could make happen. No, she couldn’t make the bride
look like a pinup model if said bride didn’t already look that way.
Penny was a dressmaker, not a miracle worker.
And before she underwent three bridal dress fittings tomorrow, she
needed a night out with her bestie.

She spotted Kristy, with her abundance of inky curls, sitting at the
walnut wall bar, saving an empty seat beside her. Her bestie wore skintight
jeans and one of her famous boob shirts in blazing red. Penny wished she
had that much cleavage to display. Sadly, she’d never progressed past a B
cup.

But that didn’t mean she wasn’t flaunting what she had in a skintight
blouse the color of an evergreen forest that wasn’t presently visible beneath
her black puffer coat. It was winter and wickedly cold outside. That’s why
she opted for jeans and her sturdy yet stylish black knee-high boots to
complete her outfit. January had roared in with blustery cold temperatures,
heaping piles of snow for most of the month. Tomorrow ushered in a whole
new month. February marked the start of her busiest time of year. If she had
a dollar for every couple who got engaged on Valentine’s Day, she’d be a
millionaire.

Over the last week, much of the snow had disappeared from the lower
elevations. But parts of the upper passes and roads were closed indefinitely
because of the massive accumulations, with avalanche warnings posted
daily like the weather report. Penny was used to it this time of year. It was
good for tourism, with skiers flocking to Winter Park. Although she had
never enjoyed the outdoor winter activities much. She preferred burrowing
indoors at home most nights during the bone chilling months. Which meant
for a good half the year, she was a homebody.

If she hadn’t experienced the week from hell, she likely would be at
home, curled up with a spot of tea, watching a period drama with her
seventeen-pound tabby cat in her lap. She loved the gowns and different
clothing styles in those shows.

The gallant men with their codes of honor
and indecent twinkles in their gazes, which told a woman while in public
they might be perfect gentlemen, behind closed doors, they were wildly
passionate and untamed, with a hint of naughtiness tossed in.
She sighed inwardly. Just once in her life she wanted to experience
passion like that.
