Barbie
It was the calm after the storm that vexed me more.
In the wake of the audience’s roars came utter silence before
shocked gasps and murmurs chased each other across the ice rink.
My hair grew like racing vines until the soft golden curls dangled under
my chin. I was transforming in front of everyone after the brutal revelation
of my true gender, helplessly responding to the chaos prince’s whim, as if I
were made for his dark desire.

No one would mistake me for a boy again. I looked every inch a girl
who had passed her precious teen years.
Rage scorched me, my nostrils flaring, my shoulders trembling. I
wanted to make Killian pay, yet terror sank its icy claws into my bone
marrow, freezing me. If any of Ruin’s agents were already in the realm,
they’d have learned about my presence in Mist of Cinder.

Soon, my father would know where I was and come for me.
By exposing me, the chaos prince had brought unthinkable danger to his
realm. I didn’t even need to make my life’s passion to destroy him; he’d
done it to himself!
You’re overreacting, Sy chimed in. This isn’t as bad as you think. You
should make your life’s passion to fuck the chaos prince. Murder can come
after.

“Come, Barbie,” Killian commanded.
He extended a hand toward me, and I nearly spat into his palm. He
pulled it back at my glare and dropped it to his side. A cruel smile formed
on his lips, but it didn’t reach his eyes.
Everyone was watching us.

Sparks of lightning flew out of Killian’s fingertips, as if the chaos prince
was daring anyone to challenge him or prevent him from taking me with
him.

Silas seethed with anger, violence brimming in his amber eyes.
I’d made an enemy out of him by making him look like a fool in front
of thousands of supernaturals. The tunnel-visioned shifter prince would
regard my act as a betrayal, and he wasn’t the forgiving kind. He hated
Killian even more, though, for taking me out of his house.

Rowan kept his expression impassive, yet interest gleamed in his silver
eyes. He sniffed the air again, sensing Sy yet unable to pinpoint her
whereabouts. It was driving him mad.

Cade winked at me, trying hard not to laugh. I stared hard at him. Fine,
he didn’t hold me accountable for my deception, unlike the others, but how
the fuck could this be funny?
Louis’s reaction was the most unexpected. He was no longer angry.
Seeing me as a girl had absolved his shame at lusting after a servant boy.
I’d freed that fucker.

Heat and thirst replaced the harsh bitterness in his pale blue eyes.
Tenderness grew in them as he watched me attentively.

Shit!
I shuddered. That was worse.
If I survived all this, I’d have to constantly ward off his thirst and
advances.
