SHANE
The scent of fresh baked cookies fills the air, thick like a fog, and the
windows are steamy from the outside.
It is cold out here, in the snow, in the place of waiting. I knock on the door,
but no one answers.
Inside they are laughing, singing, dancing. Sprinkling edible glitter over
their sugar cookies and turning up the music just a little louder as they sing
into their whisks, dripping batter all over the counter and floor that Pickles,
our cat, would no doubt be licking up later.

I tap on the window, trying to get their attention, but it is no use. The music
is too loud, and they don’t even notice I am gone.
That I’ve been gone all night. Alicia sips her wine, her apron spattered with
flour and dried batter, smiling as Lucy, our youngest at seven, sloshes the
batter around my grandmother’s tried and true ceramic bowl.
Logan stands off to the side, as thirteen-year-old boys tend to do, scrolling
through his phone, but smirking every time Lucy chucks a wee bit of batter
at Lyla, the ten-year-old who is singing way off key, likely on purpose to
annoy her siblings.

Pickles stares at me through the window, her green eyes glowing brighter
than any store-bought lights adoring on the tree.
They don’t even notice I am gone.
That I am standing in the cold, waiting for a door that will never open.
“Wake up!” Wes’s solid voice commands, followed by a friendly shake of
my shoulders.
My back is sore, likely from my hunched position as I’ve collapsed on my
desk.

“I close my eyes for ten fucking minutes…” I say as I sit up, my bones
snapping and crackling like a box of Rice Krispies.
Then again, that’s what happens when you work this job, or you have kids.
Both will age you quicker than one of those witches in Hocus Pocus.
“You’ve been putting in a lot of overtime, so I’m not surprised.” Wes notes,
crossing her arms.

“Yeah, well Ivan’s damn operation is the most important case on our
docket, Wes. You, of all people, know that —”
She raises an eyebrow at me. “Yeah, I know. Which is why you’re no good
to me sleep-deprived and overworked. I need you at your best, and quite
frankly, Shane, you have been burning the candle at both ends for months
now.” Her voice softens, and I hate it.

I look away, not wanting to see the pity, the sympathy there.
I’m not the first officer who ended up divorced. This job isn’t for the faint
of heart, and it’s been the catalyst for many marital disturbances over the
years.

But I’m not divorced yet. Though the reality is that Alicia has made it more
than clear there is no salvaging our relationship… our marriage.
Especially now that she’s found someone else. Some stockbroker
douchebag with a holiday cabin in the mountains or some shit. The kind of
man who women refer to as safe.
