IZZY
here are many definitions of the word imp. Most of which refer to a
troublemaker or, as I like to call myself, mischievous.
It was a fairly accurate description. However, in my world, it meant
something more. It referred to someone who was half demon, half fairy.
So, while I had been known to amuse myself with tomfoolery and
shenanigans, the stigma really came from being a mixed breed. Growing
up, I’d been constantly reminded that I didn’t belong in Hell, and since I
sure as fuck didn’t belong in Faery, I was always…out of place.
But in Screaming Woods, I was just Isabeau—Izzy.
“Come on, Jackie,” I pled, giving my shimmery, silver-skinned friend
my best puppy dog eyes.

Jackie shook her head adamantly as she stocked a shelf with potion
ingredients, including jars of liquid with random things floating in them. I
tried not to wonder where, or who, the finger in one of them came from.
Jackie was the assistant manager at Something Wicked—formerly
Something Special—and sometimes, I was convinced that all she did was
work. The girl desperately needed a night out. Okay, I needed it too, and I
didn’t want to go alone.

“I’m not going out with you, Izzy,” she laughed. “Last time, you
somehow talked me into skinny-dipping, and when we were chased away
from the private lake, it took twice as long as it should’ve to get back to my
place. So, I had to call Maggie to come over to oil my joints before I
rusted.”
Jackie has been the unfortunate recipient of a spell gone wrong when
Dorothy had swiped Maggie’s enchanted, sparkly red shoes.
Maggie—AKA The Wicked Witch of the West—had a sick shoe
collection that I coveted. Her egomaniac, emphasis on maniac, cousin,
Lindsay,—the one who’d actually perpetrated all the evil things that Maggie
had been blamed for—had stolen her favorite ruby red stilettos. After a
house accidentally fell on Lindsay, that little brat Dorothy ran off with the
heels. By the time Maggie caught up, she found a tin woman, scarecrow,
and cowardly lion…although I didn’t know how he got that description
since he was a brave, albeit super grumpy, lion-man.

I’d been helping Maggie try to reverse spells, but so far, we hadn’t even
figured out how the metal fused to Jackie cells would affect her in the
future. But, if she got wet and didn’t get dry quickly enough, her skin would
get stiff and hard and then she had to be oiled so she didn’t rust.
“I promise, no water this time. Just a lot of gin and vodka.”
“You should go,” Maggie commented as she stepped into the store from
the back room. Her emerald skin looked brighter in the candle lit ambience
of Something Wicked.

I’d been told that when Maggie had opened the store, it had been an
eclectic selection of items. From books to antiques to custom jewelry and
furniture, and other trinkets. After the Frankenpunch incident, she changed
the name and her stock.
