Ablast of heat billows against my cheeks when I step outside the new
rental house. My hair instantly frizzes. The bottoms of my bare feet
burn against the pebbly, red dirt road as I make my way to the mailbox at
the end of the street. I draw in a lungful of air, my lips parting from the high
humidity. I feel like I’m breathing in hot air. I’m not used to this weather
and quickly discover I don’t like it. Back home in California, all the roads
I’d lived on were paved, and the temperature was always a cool seventy-five
degrees.

“Son of a bitch,” I mutter when a tiny, sharp rock digs into the ball of
my foot. Balancing on one leg, dirt wedged between my toes, I swipe away
the embedded stone and continue walking.

South Fork is the smallest town I’ve lived in. It has a population of only
a few thousand people. I’d been forced to leave the beautiful Pacific Coast
because my mother had found love and then lost it for what felt like the
hundredth time. I didn’t have to really leave California, but my mom is my
only family. The thought of staying behind hadn’t been a factor for me. Not
to mention, I can’t exactly support myself yet, what with being a student. I
wish I could say college has been some of the best years of my life, but I
can’t. I’m tired of moving. I crave stability. I want friends to talk to and hang
out with. It shouldn’t be so difficult to obtain, but it is when you’ve been
raised by a parent who chases love.

I was shuffled around as a kid. In the last three years, I’ve lived in
eleven houses with two different “father figure” men in my life my mom
had insisted I needed. I attended three high schools in two counties. I’m
about to begin my second semester at a new community college.

Flipping down the mail door, I grab the stack of envelopes lying inside.
As I sort through the credit card bills my mother will probably never pay,
the roaring sound of engines catches my attention. I glance over my
shoulder and look past the heat mirage glistening in the middle of the road.
Two guys on four-wheelers are headed my way. A large cloud of dust
follows behind them until they stop right in front of me.

I stand still, quietly assessing them. Typical looking country boys—
barefoot, no shirts, and wearing raggedy shorts. They’re built a bit huskier
and not too lean, something I appreciate. Everyone is on a low-carb diet in
California. Both guys look similar, except one has toffee-colored eyes, and
the other has the deepest green eyes I’ve ever seen. His hat is on backward,
allowing the sun to pick up on the specks of yellow in his eyes. They’re
energetic, and I stare at them longer than I should.

“Hey there, sugar,” green eyes says. A crooked grin tugs at his mouth,
and his lazy southern drawl moves something deep inside me. “Are you
new to the area?
