CADENCE
MY PROFESSION IS PROSTITUTION. SELLING MY BODY FOR MONEY IS
what I do to survive. But it isn’t who I am.
At least that’s what I keep fucking telling myself as I walk down
Wilshire Boulevard. It’s December and sixty-five degrees, which means I’m
starting to sweat. The Hollywood sign shines bright in the distance against
the darkness of the night, and the smell of rain hangs in the air.
The street is packed with cars, and the sidewalk is filled with people
enjoying their night out.
Horns honk.
A group of girls laughs as they push past me. They look to be around
my twenty-one years. Barely legal and drunk off their asses.
Just another Friday in the City of Angels.
I skim past them with a slight smile. Any other night, I might be
inclined to make sure they reach their destination safely, but tonight is kind
of the most important of my life. After I fuck this client, I’ll be out from
under my pimp, Bobby, and free to do what I want, when I want, and for
how much.
Plus, I have enough saved that I can pay for community college. I intend
to major in business and minor in accounting. Being a college graduate has
always been my dream. And I’m good with numbers.
It still shocks me that I wound up a hooker, but it shouldn’t. I can’t
dance, so the pole isn’t an option, and I suck at stealing. Pro tip: Never steal
from a pimp. I tried to steal from Bobby, and that’s how I became a hooker.
He’s been my boss for five years. At first, I was glad he didn’t kill me.
Now, I can’t stand him, but I can’t just walk away either. Not unless I
want to die. This is why it’s imperative everything goes flawlessly with the
guy I’m meeting.
Without a doubt, this job is going to suck. Bobby wouldn’t make my last
night as one of his girls easy. I accept that and have mentally prepared. No
matter what strange fetish or twisted need my client has, I’m going to give it
my all.
I reach the Hotel BelEyre and stop, admiring the view. It’s one of the
nicest hotels in Beverly Hills. I’m still shocked this is where I’m supposed to
meet him.
There’s a doorman, and he eyes me warily, though not unkindly.
Thank goodness Bobby told me to dress appropriately, though my little
black dress is probably a smidge too short, and my black heels are most
likely an inch too high. Still, my hair and makeup are spot on.
“Good evening.” The doorman opens the door.
“Evening,” I say, going inside.
The lobby feels heavenly. The AC is cranked to the perfect temperature,
and I sigh. Mine and Kara’s tiny one-bedroom apartment doesn’t have any
air conditioning.
A patron walks by with her husband. She’s dressed head to toe in cream
Chanel and literally clutches her pearls. Her husband gawks, but only until
his wife smacks him on the arm.
I smile at them both. “Hi,” I say a little too loudly on my way to the
elevator.
