Cold, misty rain falls on my head, continuing to mess up my hair, causing
my tears to start again. I’ve been trudging through an alien jungle for
two days now, alone, lost and miserable, in basically the hardest situation
I’ve ever been through in my entire life. I don’t know how I’ve made it this
far despite the pain in my feet and legs, but somehow, I have.
And how did this happen, where I’ve been abandoned in an alien jungle,
considering I’m a twenty-six-year-old human born and raised on New
Earth?
It all began when I moved to the planet Tarvos for a higher paying job
because I thought I was so smart.
Nope. Not smart.
Instead, accepting that position led to my eventual kidnapping by a
group of Hyrrokin mafia and stuck in my present situation—running for my
life through the wildlands, searching for civilization again so I can find
someone to help me get the evidence burning a hole in my pocket to the
proper authorities.
Wet hair sticks to my face and I pant with exhaustion as I stride through
the dense foliage, staying off the main road so I won’t be discovered.
Waking up next to a giant tree in sticks and dirt, is never good. My back
kills me and my neck throbs with a persistent ache that creeps up toward
my temples. I didn’t plan for any of this terrain and have no food, water or
proper clothing for the weather. And I had to remain hidden overnight
underneath a bed of leaves and between large tree roots, because assassins
are out there, looking for me, and if I’m caught, I’m certain I’ll be killed.
Because Rokena Brimstone, the leader of this particular mafia clan,
knows I recorded a meeting I overheard and they cannot let this evidence
get to the peacekeepers on this planet.
I thought the rainy season was over when I escaped from the mansion
but apparently there was one more storm left in the weather pattern—just to
make my life miserable.
The more steps I take through the drizzle, the more I think about my
circumstances. What could I have done differently to avoid this outcome?
Not much. There were so many events entirely out of my control.
The corporation I worked for closed their Singapore office on New
Earth and I was excited to be recruited and hired off planet by what I
thought was a reputable Intergalactic staffing firm.
My new position would
be on Tarvos, the home planet of the Hyrrokin species. This position
sounded like a great jump-off point to my grand plans of one day working
for one of the huge intergalactic corporations on a space station, or the
planet Salo. My friends and family thought living off planet sounded crazy.
But I thought it was a grand adventure, and even though the planet Tarvos
and the Hyrrokin species were entirely foreign to me, the employment pay
was high and the moving bonus phenomenal. So I signed up.
But I soon learned this wasn’t a real job.
