PANDORA
“Why would a girl like her ever choose to be gold pack? How does
something like that happen?”
“Okay, the Delgado pack. Smash or pass.” Sylvia shuffled her three large
shopping bags to one arm, so she could toy with a curl in her hair.
“Pass.” I bit the inside of my lip to hide a smirk. This was her third time
bringing up the Delgado pack. They had to be her favorite.

“Seriously? Why? Those alphas are fine.” Sylvia was pouting. Actually
pouting, as if I’d just told her four-year-old self that Santa wasn’t real, or
that the winter formal was canceled.
Yeah, they were fine. Just like the last couple of times she’d brought up
how attractive they were.

“I mean, most of them are hot. But that one red headed guy… he’s kind
of shrimpy.”
“Panda! Are you talking about David?” Her voice hissed, as if we were
saying something scandalous. “He has a lighter build, but he’s still got at
least a six-pack.”

I was tempted to say that I doubted it. Or to even bring up that he’d
gone to a gala event a few months back with a suit that looked rumpled at
the sleeves. But Sylvia was saved from my teasing, when a sleek black car
rolled up in front of us. It was the company car today, not the Mercedes.
Finally.
My driver was eleven minutes late—which wasn’t like him. Henry was
never late.

He could have at least texted me if there was traffic, or if he’d gone to
get a coffee, but he’d left Sylvia and I stranded in front of the mall in radio
silence. I had almost started to get worried, but Henry might be having a
rough day or something. He had a real life, and more things to worry about
than the pair of sixteen-year old girls that he was chauffeuring around.
“Hey, Henry? What’s with the wait? Did your phone die or something?”
I called out, as I buckled myself in, settling my bag at my feet, careful not
to jostle the delicately wrapped tissue paper. I’d found the scarf that Mother
had been eyeing. It was in Charisma’s new spring collection. Silky, light.
Perfect for her birthday. The sort of thing Mother would never buy for
herself.

He didn’t say a thing. Just stared straight in front of him, holding the
steering wheel tight.
It was like someone had taken my friendly, middle-aged driver and
replaced him with a robot.
An uneasy feeling stuck to the bottom of my stomach.
I tried to give Sylvia a look, to see if she’d noticed too. But she was just
scrolling through her phone, not paying any attention.
The unease tugged at me, as I snuck glances at Henry in the rear-view
mirror. He was wearing a mask. Which he did sometimes, when he was
feeling sick… but I couldn’t recall whether he had worn one when dropping
us off in the morning.
