On a beautiful Sunday morning in early October along the Gulf Coast of
Florida, Rhonda Grayson, my business partner at The Beach House Hotel,
turned to me in our office. “Annie, take a gander at this. Remember the
royal wedding we almost had here at the hotel?”
I accepted the sheaf of heavy, creamy stationery she handed me and
noticed the engraved coat-of-arms at the top.

I read through the request for a two-week stay at the hotel in late
January and sighed. “It’s such a busy time, and Hilda Hassel already seems
difficult. She’s requesting high tea at the hotel every day to keep to her
usual routine. Doesn’t she realize we’re all about relaxing and having a
good time, not dressing up during the afternoon for something like that?
Let’s do some research before we respond to her.”

“Smart idea,” said Rhonda. “There’s something about the way she’s
demanding things I don’t like. Having someone royal in a family doesn’t
make her a fucking queen.”

“Let’s not rush things,” I said trying to remember the Hassels and the
history behind them. Although the monarchy of Bavaria was demolished in
the early twentieth century, there had been a succession of pretenders to the
throne, and the royal family was well-respected. Joseph and Charlotte
Hassel’s daughter Katrina had chosen to have a wedding at The Beach
House Hotel and then eloped with another man before it could take place.

The entire situation had been difficult, especially for Jean-Luc who’d
planned an elegant meal and then was told at the last minute that the menu
had to be changed to a traditional German biergarten one. Sighing loudly, I
said, “I don’t have a good feeling about this. But if we could expand our
European business, it could be a wise move for us.”

“This woman says she’s Charlotte Hassel’s second cousin by marriage.
I’m not impressed,” grumped Rhonda. “Let’s look her up online.”
Hilda Hassel was listed as part of the royal family due to her somewhat
scandalous marriage to Henrick Hassel, twenty-five years older than she.

He died eight years ago, and Hilda was an heiress to his estate. Though
rarely seen, she supposedly did some charitable work in his name. No
photograph of her was available, only a drawing of what appeared to be a
regal-looking woman with a straight nose and fine features. Her husband
was a handsome man who’d owned a glass factory. Hassel stemware was
well-known for their variety of wine glasses and goblets.

“She says she wants our finest accommodations, but she’s not getting
either house after the mess with her family,” said Rhonda. “Let’s give her
the Presidential Suite and make her pay a healthy deposit. If she’s willing to
do that, it will tell us a lot about her.”

“Sounds like a plan,” I said. “After the family cancelled the wedding at
the last minute, I don’t want to take any chances on disrupting our
reservations schedule for the houses. They bring in a lot of money.”
“Okay, let’s write her back and see what happens,” said Rhonda. “It’s
almost time to leave. It’s going to be fun to go to a Buccaneers game to see
Bobby and Sydney.”
