Belle’s POV
“I’m here Ma. Please tell Papa I’m going to be fine. Yes, the Embassy knows
I’m here. No, I’m not going out tonight. Alright. You and Papa go to bed
now, please? I know it’s pretty late there. I love you too.”
My mother is freaking out and I know my father is just listening in as well.
They are not saying it but I can sense that they are terrified that I am away
from them, away from Palawi, away from home. A beautiful paradise
comprised of hundreds of Islands in the Pacific, where the sky is blue and
the water is a pristine crystal shade of green.
Until now, I still can’t believe that my overprotective father gave me his
blessing to live in the US. I was ecstatic! After twenty-six years, I am
finally free! Free to do whatever I want to do without seeking my father’s
approval. Free from the ogling eyes of the people who, one way or another,
want to discredit and taint my father’s legacy by finding some fault in our
family. Unfortunately for me, as the only child of Governor-General
Galves, I’m the most vulnerable one, the most likely to screw up, and the
easiest target.
All my life, my father protected me from the public eye which meant,
having a curfew until I was twenty-five, no social media accounts– just
email and chat, and no other friends but Amy, my cousin Devon and the
servants’ children. When I was younger, especially when I was a teenager, I
did not understand why I was treated so differently. Most of the time, I was
an obedient child. Although, there were several instances I became my
father’s little rebel.
Finally, America, the land of the free and the home of the brave! New York
City is exactly how I imagined it would be and more. Back in Palawi, I
have spent sleepless nights planning and pulling some strings for me to get
a townhouse exactly like in the movies a three-story building with a
concrete staircase and a beautiful hardwood door frame with intricate
carvings. Outside are huge trees lining perfectly giving the streets a golden
surreal look come autumn.
While walking around the block I saw a flower shop called Lariza’s. I love
flowers so much. Perhaps I can buy some to display in my apartment. Some
orchids hang in front of the shop and batches of pink, red, yellow, and white
roses, tulips, carnations, and lilies are displayed as well. And then there’s
my personal favorite, the long-stemmed red daisies.
In my excitement, I hurriedly got to the spot of the red daisies but I was
completely caught off guard when my forehead hit the glass window of the
shop it made a rather loud bang!
Oh my goodness! Where in the world did this glass come from? It was not
here two seconds ago! The daisies are displayed inside the shop and not on
the aisle outside along with the other flowers. Whoever cleaned that glass
window to perfection should be given a raise. He did a great job in making
it so seamless!
I can slowly feel my blood rushing up my face. I know I am beet red!
