Ellery
“Hello,” I say in my too-sweet customer facing tone. “On the hunt for
anything special today?”
“I think I might’ve just found a perfect match.” The odd response has me
turning quickly and meeting the gaze of a man whose skin is the color of a
deep ocean at night. He’s beautiful shades of ebony from the top of his head
all the way down to his boots. Even his eyes are mesmerizing and dark,
highlighted by a silver glow around the edge of his irises. His dreaded hair
reaches down to the middle of his back. Good gods, he’s beautiful.
His is a face I don’t recognize though. This towne is large enough to have
an open market every day cycle, but it’s not so large that I don’t recognize
nearly every face I see.

He’s a stranger.
His deep voice sent a jolt through my spine, causing me to take too long
to respond, the stranger tilts his head, probing for an answer.
Recovering as quickly as possible I say, “Oh, excellent. Can I help you
wrap it for purchase?”

A heady scent invades my nostrils, making my nipples pebble against the
bodice of my dress. My back grows rigid while I grab the edge of the
booth’s table to steady myself. The scent feels like it’s wrapping around my
brain, causing a feeling of euphoria to seep into my bones. I clench my
thighs together as it overwhelms my lungs, taking my breath away.
And then it’s gone. The euphoric feeling, gone too. No trace left at all. I
tentatively look up to the stranger, hoping he didn’t notice me lose my
composure.

The devastatingly beautiful man in front of me shakes his head as if to
free himself from a trance. “Apologies, I did not mean to intrude.” Without
giving me another glance, he turns on his heel and quickly walks away.
A feeling of emptiness invades me as I watch him disappear into the
market crowd.

I’m manning my booth here, at the towne market, just as I do multiple
times a week cycle. I sell everything from herbs to vegetables to my own
concoctions made from both. And it all comes from my own lands.
That’s right a female—who is not a widow—owns her own lands.
When my uncle passed, someone had to take over his farm. My aunt died
in childbirth and their son has always favored adventures over plowing
fields. I took over the lands as a temporary solution, just until my cousin
could make it home from his travels.

That was seven years ago, I’m now thirty-one and am full owner of the
lands after my cousin relinquished his rights. I’m not ignorant to the
uncommonness of this situation, but in the end it worked out best for all
considering the tragic circumstances that started the ownership transition.
Thanks to working on my family’s farm my entire life, I’ve been able to
