van, painting abstract patterns with his chosen medium of nasal sebum,
looked like the specter of death. With the river rushing by outside, for a
short moment made more surreal by the three Oxycodone pills she’d
popped half an hour earlier, Carolina wondered if she had died and if this
man was Charon, come to ferry her soul to the underworld.

Do I even care? She ruminated on it as she watched him peep inside her
ride, desperate in his attempts to spy on her. To take her.
Then he spoke, and the illusion was spoiled.
“I’m looking for Carolina McKay,” he said, smashing half his face tight
against the glass, flattening his features and forcing them out of proportion.
He was no longer the painter. Now, he was the subject in one of Picasso’s
portraits. Not a flattering look.

For Carolina, the previous weeks had been a blur of pain and pills. Pills
and pain. She vaguely remembered her mother kicking her off her property,
calling her a Judas in her ever-theatrical, over-the-top, kind way, but life
consisted mostly of long interludes of delirium and sleep.
Carolina didn’t mind being ordered off Beatrice’s acreage as life
alongside Little Elk Creek brought with it much-needed solitude. With the
weather turning colder, even the bugs weren’t a bother.

The land was almost heavenly in its serenity. The wind whispered to her
through the trees, and the river babbled bedtime stories. The occasional deer
or raccoon wandered across the land to remind her the world was still
ongoing but didn’t try to get her involved. It was far better than she
deserved.

She couldn’t recall her last foray into town but would need to return
soon as her food supplies were dwindling, and hunting animals had never
been her bag. She couldn’t even recall whether she’d eaten yesterday—not
that she cared. Coffee and Oxy kept her functioning.
The man outside her van knocked on the rear panel like the world’s
most annoying door-to-door salesman.
“Who the fuck is this creep?” she asked aloud, unsure whether she was
posing the question to herself or to Yeti.
