“Oh, Alicia! You are here, I am so happy to see you.”
Alicia Steward grinned at the sound of the voice that drifted towards her the
second she alighted from the carriage.
“I am so glad you made it!”
Within seconds, a group of three women joined her on the cobblestone
pavement in front of the carriages.
It was Daphne Gibson who spoke first, looking down at Alicia with a wide
grin, her eyes shimmering with delight at the prospect of an event.
“Oh, you look absolutely lovely,” she continued, her smile widening. “You
always do—like a princess from a fairytale.”
Alicia laughed and looked up at her friend. “Thank you, darling Daphne,”
she said. “I must say, your dress is beautiful. Is it new?”
Daphne nodded eagerly. “Indeed,” she admitted with a smile. “Father
bought it on one of his travels.”
Where they stood next to each other, the pair made quite a picture. Alicia,
with her blonde curls, emerald eyes, and petite frame, and Daphne, tall and
slender, with raven waves and soft brown eyes.
Evelyn Miller and Penelope Spencer looked at their friends with small
smiles. They, too, formed part of a lovely picture where they stood in front
of the carriage.
“It is lovely, Daphne,” Penelope agreed, her round face lighting up as she
giggled. “Perfect for the Season. I can tell now that gentlemen will be lining
up to dance with us all.”
Alicia’s face fell at this, and she pouted. “Oh, please, no. If I have to dance
with one more gentleman, only to hear that I have failed to make a suitable
match, I might just run away.”
Daphne’s smile froze as well, and she shook her head quickly. “Please,” she
insisted softly, “let’s not talk about the Season and suitors quite yet. I am
still weary from the previous Season.”
Evelyn glanced around to ensure that no one could overhear and took a step
towards her friends. “Did you hear,” she whispered fervently, “that Miss
Margaret blatantly refused to make an appearance this Season? Her father
sent her away, he is furious. Mother said—well, I was not meant to
overhear it, but she said that they were in dire financial straits and the Baron
had counted on Margaret to make a favorable match and save them from
ruin.”
Alicia gasped at this, her eyes wide. “Are you certain?”
Evelyn nodded quickly. “My mother was quite certain,” she insisted. “But,
of course, they changed the topic as soon as they noticed that I was there.”
The murmurs of the group hushed as they leaned in, absorbed in Evelyn’s
revelation.
Penelope’s eyes widened, a hand covering her mouth in shock. “Goodness
gracious,” she whispered, her eyes darting around to ensure no curious ears
were lurking nearby. “Miss Margaret, pulling out of the Season? That’s
scandalous, indeed!”
Daphne’s brow furrowed, concern etched on her face. “But how dreadful
for her family. To be in such a dire financial situation and to depend on a
match for their salvation… How is Miss Margaret taking it?”
