The Shadowborn City had gone quiet.
It had happened suddenly, this tense anxiety that had settled over the
entirety of the city. The Sanctuary, normally bustling with activity in the
days leading up to the Awakening, was practically silent. People were still
going about their tasks, but they were doing it quietly, barely speaking
above a whisper. No one seemed to want to attract any attention, or to be
heard conversing about virtually anything. But despite the tension in the air,
whispers had still reached Lithra. Whispers about some dire event at the
palace.
Lithra unclasped her linen cloak, letting it drop to the ground behind her.
She’d worn it for anonymity— her light hair was unusual enough in
Karazhen that she was always noticeable— but she’d reached the top of one
of the Sanctuary’s sacred hills, and the cloak would only get in the way for
what she planned next. She rubbed her arms, looking over her shoulder to
check that she was indeed alone, then turned back to the juniper tree she’d
chosen, the tallest in the grove.
The scent of the trees was heavy around her,
and she breathed it in, trying to center herself, but the smell did little to
calm her. She hadn’t wanted to believe what she’d heard, but she needed to
know the truth of the rumors. No matter what that truth might imply.
She shoved a pair of smaller branches aside, then placed her foot on one
near knee-height that looked thick enough to bear her weight for a moment.
She began to climb, batting the dense branches away from her face and
swearing softly at the needles that scratched and jabbed at her skin.
When she’d climbed as high as she felt she could safely trust the
strength of the tree, maybe fifteen feet in the air, she turned outward to
orient herself, shielding her eyes from the glare of the morning sun on the
Akkenthian Sea. Once they had adjusted, she leaned out slightly, turning
her gaze on the palace.
A haze of smoke hung over the structure, dark but not thick enough to
obscure the obvious damage from view. More than a quarter of the palace
was in ruins, little more than rubble. In the morning light, a faint red glow
colored the pale walls of the parts that still stood as isolated fires ate at
anything in the rubble that could burn.
Lithra’s blood felt cold in her veins. The rumors had been no more than
fearful whispers, but enough people had witnessed the events of the night
before that the stories were consistent, and what she saw bore them out. In
the early hours of the morning, a terrible and inhuman scream had echoed
through the palace grounds, and the next moment, a dragon had burst
through one of the walls from the inside, fire streaming from its jaws.
It had
been flying away from the palace with mighty beats of its wings when the
second dragon had torn through the same hole in the wall in close pursuit,
quickly reaching the first to grapple with it in midair. The battle that
followed had shaken the very foundations of the palace.
