Lucy
I step out of the estate lawyer’s office, bemused and in fact highly agitated.
Time spent telling off my loathsome cousin, Sebastian, with a variety
of sharp curse words didn’t help much either. It felt good to get everything
off my chest, but I’m still left upset and haven’t calmed down in the
slightest.

It’s a beautiful spring day outside on New Earth and yet the chirping
birds and the perfume of blossoms falling from the trees don’t soothe me
like they should.
My heart still aches over the fact that my beloved grandfather passed
away a month ago. And today I discovered he left a provision in his will
that stated I can only inherit his highly profitable cat finder business if I can
prove that I’m happily married.

Happily married?
And if I can’t provide evidence of this bizarre state of “happily married”
within the next moon cycle, the business, currency and property I was set to
inherit will instead go to my worthless second cousin, who I’m certain will
dissolve and sell off our brand and site to the highest bidder.
“Are you okay?” a kind elderly lady I’ve known my entire life asks as I
pace out front, on the street.

“Y…yes. I’m just pissed off,” I hiss, with my hands clenched into tight
fists. “I got some bad news today about Grandad’s will that is very
upsetting. My life is being turned upside down.”
“Oh, well then.” She hastily steps back. “I hope you figure it out,
darling Lucy. Good luck.” And then she scurries off down the sidewalk.
I exhale, trying again to calm down. My fiery temper is well known in
these parts, so it’s understandable that she left me alone. I’m actually not in
the right mind for conversation. “Godsdammit,” I growl.

Grandad knew I had no plans of being chained to anyone. I live happily
alone in this small town—just me and my darling cats—and I do what I
want when I want. And I planned on remaining that way for the rest of my
life. I was going to carry on, growing the site my grandparents started to
facilitate cat care and breeding, while tending to local feral cats. It sounded
like a good life. Not spectacular, but pretty darn good.

I shake my fist at the sky. “I don’t want to get married.”
Richard Hansen, my beloved grandfather, always thought it wasn’t good
for me to remain single. He would’ve been happy with me having either a
husband or a wife, or even a few of each, as long as there were grandkids
involved and a loving union. All he cared about was me not alone.

But I like being alone. It doesn’t bother me in the least. I’m overweight,
sharp-tongued and plain. I’ve never been on a date and there isn’t a
boyfriend on the horizon, which is perfect. I get to decide what I’m having
for dinner, what vid shows I watch and where I’m going and what I spend
my currency on, without having to debate or argue any of those choices
