“Healer”
My head snaps up at the voice. I immediately recognize the intense
presence that makes up Maverick. I swallow hard and try to put into
practice the calming techniques Sage, my friend and another healer, has
been making me practice. “Y-yes,” I stammer, hating the hesitation in my
voice. I take another deep breath. I won’t let him see how nervous he makes
me. “Can I help you?” I ask, proud of the fact that I can talk at all. I’ve
come a long way in the last several months.

He scowls at me, his usual. He steps closer, and I automatically take a
step backwards. He’s always around, making me nervous. I can’t figure out
why he’s still here. He came to the Northwoods pack before the war with
the vampires; and he hasn’t left, despite being a beta for another pack.
Nobody knows why he’s sticking around, least of all me. And I don’t have
the desire to find out why. I just know he makes me more nervous than any
of the other wolves, and that’s saying a lot because there are plenty of
powerful wolves in this pack that make me incredibly nervous.

Of course,
there’s one, though, that stands out above the rest. A certain male wolf
that’s tall and lean, yet muscular with brown hair and dimples and so
devastatingly handsome I’m unable to breathe every time he comes around.
I avoid that one like it’s my full-time job, which right now, it sort of is. At
least until I can act like a normal human being in front of him. Maverick
takes a step closer to me and sniffs, setting off every alarm in my head. My
heart starts racing, and I fight to stay calm.

And then a voice calls out. “Maverick, back off.” I close my eyes and
take a steadying breath as a new player enters the scene. “Can’t you see
you’re making her nervous?” that hard voice says. I feel a presence beside
me, close enough to touch me, but not. I open my eyes but don’t dare look
at the tall man beside me. I take a deep breath. Wyatt.

Maverick looks back at me, a sneer on his face; and I prepare myself for
whatever snarky comment he’s going to say. He doesn’t let me down.
“What? I can’t even talk to the healer? Seems to me, that I should be able to
at least carry on a conversation with her. Of course, I see this healer at least
every once in a blue moon. The other two healers don’t even leave the
healer house.”

I bite my tongue to keep from defending the other two healers I live
with—Ava and Rose. He doesn’t get to say anything about either of them.
He has no idea what they’ve been through, what all three of us have been
through. He’s right; they don’t leave the house. But they have good reason
not to. I’ve only just started leaving the house to work at the clinic that’s in
