“All right,
” Leddy said as he listened. His parents had actually
named him Ledbetter Finster, and they wondered why in the hell he moved
to the middle of nowhere. The blackness of the news cast a pall over him,
threatening to swallow him whole. “Yes, I know that. I need to make flight
arrangements. But I’ll let you know.”

“You need to get back here. You haven’t seen Dad in years, because
you haven’t bothered to come home.” The holier-than-thou attitude of his
older brother instantly got under his skin, the way it always did.

“I was working and building a career.”
“At what cost?” he snapped. “You couldn’t bother to see Dad….”
Leddy stood straighter. “Quit your usual bullying or you can handle
everything yourself,” he snapped. “Dad and I talked two or three times a
week. I know about his life, and I know he was proud of what I was trying
to do.” Aaron could be a real pain in the ass when he wanted to be. “You
don’t get to make decisions for other people.”

He was tempted to be nasty, but held his tongue. “Like I said, I’ll make
arrangements to fly back, and I’ll let you know my schedule. It’s all I can
do.” He turned to look over his studio, the pieces placed out to dry and the
one still sitting on his easel, half finished. For days, his mind had been filled
with how he wanted it to look, that image bright and sharp, but now it had
receded, pushed back by the encroachment of grief and regret.

“Dad made all his arrangements in advance, so I can schedule the
memorial service for while you’re here, but I have to go back to work right
away.” Aaron was an electrical contractor, so if he didn’t work, he didn’t get
paid. At least that was the excuse he always used.

“I understand. I figure I’ll stay at the condo while I’m there.” It was so
much to take in. Leddy was already moving through his cabin, pulling the
suitcase from the back of the closet, setting it on the bed.
“Good. While you’re there, you can start clearing it out. We’re going
to need to get all the furniture and things out so we can sell it. And you
know Dad—he tended to hold on to everything.

I might be able to help
some, but with Janine and little Amy, my time is pretty limited. But we’ll do
what we can.” Voices raised behind him. “No. Not there…. Hold on,”
Aaron yelled away from the phone. “I have to go. Call me when you know
your flight stuff.”

“I will,” Leddy agreed, ending the call without further conversation.
What the hell else was there to say? His father had had a stroke while he
slept, and just like that, he was gone. Not even twenty-five and already both
their parents were gone, taken three years apart… and both just as suddenly.

He really thought he’d have more time. Mom had had a massive heart
attack in bed and had died right next to Dad. Now Dad had died in his
sleep. Both times, Leddy had had no idea and was totally unprepared.
