“Winter Wonderland”
December 9, 8:56am
Curse that goddamn cat.
Rachel raced into the employee lounge of Mistletoe Mall,
struggling to hook one of her fake elf ears into place. The cheap silicone
pieces cost twenty dollars each, and she refused to buy a new pair, but this
was the third time Lucifer had stolen one of them and used it as a chew toy.
She wouldn’t have even realised the thing was missing if she hadn’t noticed
something vibrating when she picked up her work bag on her way out of
her room and pulled out Fish (one of Lucifer’s actual toys), and discovered
she was short an ear.
It had taken fifteen minutes of searching, and then ten more minutes of
chasing her demon cat to wrestle the ear back. That left her on a race to the
bus (which she’d missed), followed by twenty minutes standing in the
freezing rain waiting for the next one and praying she would get to work on
time. Now she had four minutes to get dressed and get to Santa’s Village
before the morning huddle started. Her boss, Curtis, was on a real power
trip lately, and Rachel refused to get written up.
The lounge was busy, five or six elves putting the finishing touches on
their outfits before they had to meet at Santa’s Village on the main floor at
nine. After hanging her coat on the back of a chair, Rachel ducked into the
Quiet Room, which was usually designated as a space within the lounge for
mall employees who, Rachel assumed, needed quiet.
For the months of
November and December though, the lounge had become Santa’s Village’s
break room, and, for those elves like Rachel who refused to take public
transit dressed in tights, the Quiet Room had become a change room.
Luckily no one was using it right now, since everyone else had actually
gotten to work on time, and Rachel was able to duck in and strip out of her
damp jeans and sweater in record time.
She pulled out her crumpled elf costume from her duffel bag and gave it
a quick shake. A smell hit her like a slap in the face, and her nose scrunched
as she struggled to figure out where the hell it was coming from. A dark
stain on the hem of her skirt made her stomach drop. Did Lucifer—it wasn’t
pee, she realised, and with rising horror it hit her that her demon spawn hell
cat had thrown up into her work bag, and, based on the lack of puke she’d
found while looking for her ears earlier, the little shit had eaten it.
God, she was gonna be sick.
Before she could make her uniform situation even worse, there was a
knock on the door, which snapped her out of her disgust.
“One second!” She called, stepping into the dress with a grimace. The
skirt was still damp! She gagged. But there was no time to dwell on it. She
was two minutes away from being late.
