THE ACADEMY OF ASSASSINS went by many names all over the world.
The Society of Devils. Demons’ Cave. Hell. No matter what they dubbed
themselves, they had one goal: to create more monsters. Alastair would find
every one if it was the last thing he did. Likely, it would be. He always kept
one ear to the ground, searching for every leader. Every tormentor. He could
not let their sickness grow in ranks. Alastair had not survived to forgive and
forget. He had been spit from hell with one goal: vengeance.
The end of August was always the same for him. Each night for two weeks,
he scavenged the fields around the counties of Cavan, Monaghan, and
Roscommon in Ireland. The killing fields. That was where he had survived
the worst night of his life. It was where he found more children than he
liked each year. Most were already dead. They deserved a proper burial.
Every once in a while, a miracle would happen. Alastair would get there in
time to save a singular child. This was slaughter season. It was when those
failing the academy either broke or died the most horrible death imaginable.
He couldn’t walk away knowing such a terrible place existed and do
nothing. This was all he had. It was all that mattered.
He was one person. Alastair couldn’t storm the building and take them all
out at once. There were too many, and they were too well connected. Only
one person had ever done that and survived and that had been at a US
division. Alastair couldn’t help anyone if he was dead. Those one or two
children he saved were too important to lose his life in a pointless
showdown. Plus, what good what that do? Cut off one head. Three more
grew in its place.
The night moved slowly and wrecked his barely existent mental health. It
also fed his fury, keeping him determined to speak for the dead. After three
extra nights of facing a nightmare, Alastair flew back to the US with his
mind on lockdown. He had to stay that way for his sanity’s sake. Alastair
had to close out the images in his head. He comforted himself those boys
had gotten a proper burial. Sometimes, that was all he had. The successes
were fewer and fewer.
Over a year ago, Alastair had moved to the US to be closer to one boy he
had dragged out alive. He had lived with Alastair for nearly two years,
healing from the horrendous torture he endured. Cormac was like a son to
Alastair. He was the closest thing to family Alastair ever had. His return to
the living, and the wonderful life he had built since, gave Alastair hope
maybe he wasn’t wasting his time. Maybe some of these boys thrived. For
all his work since, Alastair wasn’t so sure he could say the same of himself.
He was an empty shell.
