2 years after
I wait outside the pre-K playground and watch Isabel and Marcus Jr.
walk off to the entrance. They turn and wave a couple of times, and I wave
right back at them with a bright smile on my face. Their red cheeks and
happy faces give me hope for the future.
They’re so young, and they deserve every little bit of happiness they can
get. And I will fight to keep them from harm, always.
I’ve become much surer of my own power ever since these kids came
into my life. They’ve shown me there are more things that I can live for. It’s
never been easy, knowing where I came from. But when I look at my kids, I
know things will be okay.
I wave one more time as they enter the building and disappear from sight.
With a sigh, I turn around and stroll to the nearest park, where I sit down on a
bench and fish my book from my bag as well as an apple. I start reading the
book while eating the apple, distracting myself from the fact that my kids are
now in someone else’s hands. But I know they’ll be all right. It’s just a
mother’s concern talking in my head, and I won’t let it push me away from
my goal.
My kids will have the best chance they can get at life, and nothing will
get in their way of achieving their dreams. Not even me. If Marcus Jr. wants
to become a pilot, then so be it. Even if it means I won’t see him that often;
even if it means he’s in danger. At least, he’ll do something he loves, and
that’s worth every second of his precious life. Same goes for Isabel, who’s
already expressed she wants to be a teacher. Granted, being a teacher isn’t
really that dangerous, so I guess she’ll end up fine.
I smile to myself as I read my book, enjoying every page as if it were my
last.
These paper pages make me think of the first time I ever touched a book,
and how not so long ago it was. What a big difference a small amount of time
can make.
Still, I’m not entirely sure I’m ready to say my life is completely fine
now.
There’s still one thing left to do, and it keeps haunting my mind. So
much so, that I close my book sooner than expected and go back home.
Daniel’s already waiting for me at the door, and he gives me a quick
peck on the lips. “Ready to go?”
I take a deep breath and let it sink in before I answer. “Yes. I’m ready.” I
nod.
Daniel hands me the stack of papers that contains all the information
about the men who abducted countless women, including me … and every bit
of detail about an underground slave-trading, death-dealing group of
companies so large they span the globe.
Daniel smiles briefly. “Let’s go to the police station then.”

I take a sip of my coffee and watch Angel from the corner of my eye as
he helps Lily finish her small serving of veggies. “I don’t like them,” Lily
says, frowning.
