It isn’t the seventy-five steps to the platform that makes me anxious,
it’s the fact that the pool looks smaller than a postage stamp from
this height. Mom and Sophie are in their usual spots, third row from the
bottom, right side. From here they look like ants. Even without being able
to see them, I’m sure Mom’s hands are hiding her eyes.
The Olympic size pool is silent as the crowd anticipates my dive. I take
a deep breath, followed by a few prep jumps, and leap—twisting, piking,
and tucking my way to a perfect entrance into the water below.
Instead of surfacing, I allow myself to sink twenty feet and rest on the
bottom. Cerulean blue water encases me in a loving embrace and, for the
first time today, I feel myself relax. When I’m in the water, nothing else
matters. I’ve always loved the water, in any shape or form, but now that I’m
older, the water feels like a part of me that was ripped from my soul.
From the corner of my eye, I see a rescue diver heading toward me,
certain I’ve somehow lost consciousness. I stand as he grabs my arm and
pulls me to the surface. The crowd erupts in applause as he drags me to the
side of the pool where Mom and Sophie are waiting.
Two large men haul me to the concrete, turning me sideways to expel
the water that should be in my lungs. When nothing comes out, they turn
me back, assessing for damage. “I’m good.” My words barely carry over
the noise of the crowd. The men turn me to the side again, this time hitting
their flat palms between my shoulder blades. I turn myself upright, fighting
against them to sit up. “Guys.” I hold my hands up. “Thank you for your
help, but I assure you I’m fine. I’m not drowning. I sat on the bottom
because I wanted to.”
The taller of the two sits back, assessing me for head injuries. His tiny,
bright light flashes on and off into my pupils. “No one can stay under that
long.”
“Murphy Aloysius McKenzie!” A pat hits me on the shoulder. “You’ve
got to stop doing this. You gave everyone in here a fright!”
“I’m okay, Mom.” I stand, and the crowd erupts in applause for the
second time. I wave, not sure what the protocol for people thinking you’ve
drowned is.
“Thank goodness your father wasn’t here to witness that display. You
would’ve given him a heart attack.” She straightens her cotton dress and
clears her throat in frustration.
“That was stupid, Murph.” Sophie is a few years younger than me. The
top of her head barely reaches my chest. “Not to mention embarrassing. All
of my friends are going to think you can’t swim. I’m never going to hear the
end of this.”
“I’m sorry to be such a burden on you, sis. The water felt so good I
didn’t want to leave.”
“Whatever. Tell that to Susan Boatwright. She’s never going to let me
live this down.” Sophie storms off, leaving Mom and me standing on the
edge of the pool.
