Lost Creek, Colorado
Detective Madison Harper looks around the dimly lit diner at the distraught
but determined faces of the people who invited her here tonight. She’s at a
support group meeting for those with missing family members. They want
her to listen to their stories. Remember their loved ones. Search for the
missing.
But there’s only so much she can do. It’s not up to Madison whether the
Lost Creek Police Department reopens cold cases. If it were—and if new
homicides could magically cease for the foreseeable future—she would
work through each of these people’s cases one by one until they were all
reunited with their missing loved ones, and until support groups like this
weren’t needed in her hometown.
The icy December wind howls outside the windows. A shiver runs
through her as sixty-one-year-old Vince Rader, owner of Ruby’s Diner,
walks by. He’s preparing hot drinks for everyone. Vince closes the diner a
little early one Wednesday a month, allowing this small group of distraught
people the chance to support each other. He has a whole bulletin board
dedicated to missing people. It’s covered in the posters of those missing not
just from Lost Creek but from nearby towns and cities. It’s a subject close
to his heart, because for six long and torturous years he was in these
people’s unthinkable position, until Madison helped find his wife and
grandson last year. Eleven-year-old Oliver Rader is here tonight, helping his
grandfather prepare the refreshments. Unfortunately, Vince’s wife Ruby
didn’t make it home.
Local resident Robert Dorsey clears his throat. “My thirteen-year-old
son disappeared five years ago,” he says. Although only in his late forties,
Robert’s face is heavily lined, and his long black hair, which he keeps tied
back, is sprinkled with silver strands. Several have escaped, giving him a
disheveled appearance.
“Brandon was walking home from school one afternoon,” he continues,
his intense gaze fixed on Madison. “He saw his friend to her door and then
continued on alone. Once he left her property, no one ever saw him again. I
hate this saying because it’s become meaningless in this country, but
Brandon literally vanished into thin air, which is impossible.” He swallows.
“Someone knows something. Someone saw something. Someone did
something. So why can’t you investigate, Detective Harper? You could requestion everyone the department spoke to back then. Rewatch the
surveillance footage. We all know you could have it solved in a week if you
really wanted to.”
Madison hesitates before responding. She can’t tell him that the real
reason she can’t investigate his son’s disappearance is due to a lack of
resources. Lost Creek is a small mountain town in southwestern Colorado.
The police department is also small, with only two detectives. Most days,
the team struggles to cope with new and current investigations, so finding
the time and resources to put into cold cases isn’t always possible. Not
unless something prompts it: a new witness coming forward, or a body
being found.
