Dr. Olson, the Dean of the Communications department at
Willowbridge Park University, set my resume down on her
cluttered desk and smiled warmly. “Well, Ms. Cosgrove, I have to
say, your undergraduate accomplishments combined with your graduate work
thus far are impressive. Considering how highly your former professors speak
of you, I think you’d make a wonderful teaching assistant for our
communications program.”
Grinning, I tried not to look as eager as I felt. Teaching at my alma mater
had been my goal since I’d started my graduate program two years ago.
“That’s great! Teaching here has been a dream for a long time.”
“Which is why I think you’ll be a perfect fit.” She bit her lip and
drummed her fingers on the stack of folders in front of her, then began
scrolling on her computer. “Unfortunately, most of the TA spots are full, but
we have a few remaining. Let me see what’s available.”
My heart sank a bit, as I’d been afraid that might happen. As soon as I’d
heard positions were available, I’d applied, but there had been a glitch in the
university’s electronic application system that kept my application from
going through. By the time I realized what had happened, I was several days
past the deadline. Now we were six days out from the start of the semester,
all the good TA spots were filled, and my dream of getting paired with one of
my old professors likely wouldn’t be realized.
