GIGI

I’ll blame my death on a large vanilla latte and a small bladder.
Along with my older brother, Benny, who parked his Range Rover
behind a sketchy warehouse twenty minutes ago and instructed me to stay
in the car until he returned. He should’ve remembered I carry the attention
span of a squirrel and can’t be left alone in weird places for long.
No one has entered after him, and as the daughter of a Mafia boss, I’m
certain illegal activity is happening inside. Anything from corruption to
murder falls within those parameters.

But it’s something my bladder and I will have to risk.
“I’m kicking your ass if I get E. coli, Benny,” I mutter while stepping
out of the SUV.
The New York wind whips against my face as I stomp toward the
building.

Hopefully, there isn’t Crime Scene tape blocking off the restroom.
Or I don’t die, of course.
I tug at the door, finding it unlocked, and invite myself right in.
The scent of harsh cleaning solutions hits me.
Fingers crossed they also used that in the restroom.
“Ben—” I’m cut off by a scream.

“Please!” a man desperately begs. “Let me go!”
Instead of fleeing like a rational person, I tiptoe toward the noise.
Crouching behind a row of barrels, I peek through the narrow gap to find a
beat-up man bound to a chair. Three men dressed in black suits surround
him. Swear to God, it’s like a scene plucked straight out of The Sopranos.
I blink, inching closer, certain one looks familiar.
A suited man steps toward the restrained one and punches him in the
face. I wince at the loud crack when he rears his fist back for another hit.
Blood gushes down the tied-up man’s nose.
“Antonio, please!” he howls in pain. “Let me speak with your father. I’ll
explain —”

Antonio.
As in Antonio Lombardi—son of notorious crime boss Vincent
Lombardi.
He’s considered the sane one in his family, but that doesn’t mean he
isn’t as corrupt as the others. From the rumors, he just does a better job of
hiding his ruthlessness behind his charm and smooth talking.
Another fun fact about the maniac? He’s also a cold-blooded killer.
“Speak with my father?” Antonio spits. His calculated timbre sends
shivers down my spine. “You think he’d speak with a rat who talked to the
police, Norman?”

Oh man, a rat?
Norman is doomed.
Antonio backhands him, and Norman doubles over in agony.
I creep closer while Antonio digs two black gloves from his pocket and
slips them on. A brawny man drags a blanket off something in the corner to
reveal an animal carrier and brings it to Antonio.
“Do you know what eats rats, Norman?” Antonio opens the carrier with
a click.

“Uh …” Norman kicks his heels against the concrete, pitifully
attempting to break free.
Antonio removes an animal from the carrier.
I wedge my head between two barrels to get a clearer view.
