IF YOU’VE EVER SPENT A SUMMER IN ATLANTA, YOU KNOW WHY AIR-
conditioning isn’t a luxury. Even with all the AC vents pointed at me, I still
wanted to stick my head out the window. At least the temperature in the car
got down to below eighty.
I pulled up to the house and cut the engine, slamming the door on my
way out. I wanted to kick myself for not negotiating lower on account of
only a trickle of air coming out of those vents. At least it had a decent paint
job, which was saying something for a car that old.

The front door opened as I was reaching for it, and Thor looked over my
shoulder. “What in God’s name is that?”
I tossed him the keys. “Your new ride.”
After staring at them in his hand for a few seconds, he looked back at
the Ford Escort. “Mine? Are you insane?”
“It was either that or a 1976 Pinto, but they’re dangerous. Get rearended in one of those things and it’s game over.”
“And that contraption is safe?”

I glanced back at the car. “Yeah. Escorts were flying off the shelves in
the eighties. By the way, you owe me twelve hundred bucks, which was a
bargain.” I hoped the engine lasted for at least another year.
Sensing a lengthy bitch session coming on, I went into the bedroom to
change my shirt. I reeked of engine oil from looking around under the hood
at the dealership—if you could call the rattrap I just came from a car
dealership. The place was more like a snake oil emporium, but the cars
were cheap.

When I walked back into the living room, Thor was still standing by the
door, looking at the car keys in his hand.
“Is there a problem?”
He cocked his head and squinted at me. “This is a joke, right?”
There was nothing funny about parking my Harley in the shithole
neighborhoods we usually ended up in when we worked a case, and I had
enough stress in my life without having to worry about my bike. “We need
a backup ride.”
“Fine.” He held the keys out to me. “You drive that thing.”
“Not on your life,” I muttered, walking into the kitchen to grab
something to drink.

“I suppose this means I’ll have to get a driver’s license.”
I filled a glass with water and shrugged. “I’d advise it, but do whatever
you want. Just don’t call me if you land yourself in the clink for driving
without one.”
Before he could argue about it any further, I heard a car pull up to the
house.

“That’s him.” I glanced at Thor’s bare chest. “Go put on a shirt.”
While Thor disappeared down the hallway to make himself presentable,
I went to the door to greet our new client. I should say potential client
because we hadn’t actually had a face-to-face conversation with the man
