FOUR REDCAPS STOOD outside
Daniel’s house in Emortalia, hitting their
clubs against their empty hands. It seemed they were trying to intimidate us
with the display, but it wasn’t working.
“Sit and watch,” Durlan said and kissed my cheek. His long silver hair
was pulled back and tied with a piece of leather. I preferred his hair free, but
I also enjoyed the unblocked view of his handsome face.
I sat on Daniel’s porch and tore into the dried meat Ryul had given me.
“Okay,” I said around the food.
Ryul sat beside me and chewed his meat.
Durlan, Amrynn, Venali, and Myrin walked away from the house,
swords in hand.
Daniel leaned against the side of his house near me, his arms folded
across his chest, and wore a bored expression.
“You could just let me have them all,” Venali said, his magenta eyes
glowing brightly with excitement.
“Not a chance,” Durlan said, his hair whipping from side to side as he
shook his head. “I need some exercise.”
“There are other ways we can exercise,” I called out loudly.
Durlan turned. “I plan on that after I’ve got you worked up from
watching us kill these redcaps. Once we are done, I will take care of you.”
He had been more aggressive lately, which I was pretty certain was due
to the fact that he didn’t have anything to strategize and was bored.
I was not complaining.
“Tease,” I called back and took another bite.
He winked at me, and his sword began to glow.
Well, that was new.
“You underestimate us,” the middle redcap growled. “It will be your
downfall.”
“We’ve killed at least twelve of your kind the past week,” Venali said,
still smiling, the three scars of his left eye slightly scrunched. “You
underestimate us.”
A few of the shapeshifters came out of their houses and sat on their
porches like I did. They’d become desensitized to the redcaps’ attacks and
knew my guys could handle them.
If things started to get out of control, Daniel and Ryul would join the
fight.
“Water?” Ryul asked and held out a cup.
I took it and guzzled it. “Thanks.” I scooted a bit closer so I could lean
my shoulder against his.
With the possibility of losing them so close, I was using every chance I
had to touch them, spend time with them, and engage in whatever activities
they wanted to. It resulted in several late nights where I ended up coated in
sweat and smiling like a drunken fool, though no alcohol was present.
“Ready?” Myrin asked, smiling wide enough to show off his sharp
canines. Black tendrils slid from his fingertips, down his sword, and coated
the blade. The blade glowed with a black sheen, and I wondered what it
would feel like to get cut with it.
