Trent
“IT WASN’T MY FAULT.”
Amir
sighs tiredly.
“She said you swore at her, Trent.” He sounds exhausted and looks even
worse. “Just give it to me straight. Did you use profanity in front of this
woman?”
“No,” I growl. Amir looks at me skeptically. “Probably.”
My business partner sits on the edge of his desk near me, crossing one
ankle over the other. “Trent, we’ve talked about this. You’ve got to filter
yourself in front of our guests. Anything you say can be misconstrued and
used against us.”
I fist my hands on my knees, feeling my pulse pound in my neck. “Why
don’t you believe me when I say this whole mess wasn’t my fault?” I say in
disbelief. “If you had been out on-site, which you never are–”
At this, Amir tilts his head in acknowledgement.
“–you would be taking my side right now. That woman was a highmaintenance–”
Amir clears his throat, leveling me with an impatient look. He’s got
smudges under his eyes, visible even through his wire-rimmed glasses, and
his dark hair has been raked through. I’d guess he’d been here at the office
late again, trying to reconcile the books and find ways to speed up
construction on our new build.
“If I had been there,” he says calmly, “I would have tried to smooth things
over. I would have apologized. Profusely. Offered Gabby a warm beverage
and a blanket, coaxing her to sit by the fire while I ventured into the woods
to find her pooch.”
“Pissant,” I say under my breath. “How anybody could call that rat a
dog–”
“Particulars aside, you and Goose scared her off. She wrote–and publicly
posted–a terrible review. And now I’m not only going to have to refund the
Othmans for their stay, I’m also going to have to pay for the poor pup’s
medical bills he incurred from his–” Amir turns his laptop around and
points to a line in Gabby’s email. “Copious calamitous injuries, not to
mention irreversible damage to his psyche.”
“That’s horse sh–”
“Trent.” Amir inhales deeply through his nose. “This isn’t funny,” he says
firmly. “I’ve been able to cover for you in the past, but I can’t keep doing
this. You know we’re in a tight spot. We need every penny we can get right
now, and if you continue to chase away our business, I’m going to have
to–” he presses his lips together, searching for the right words to threaten
me.
“What? Replace me?”
“Unfortunately…” Amir pushes off the desk, walking around it to his
seat. “You and I both know you are irreplaceable. You’re the best Kitt’s
Harbor’s got.”
So is he, when it comes to business sense. We make a good team when
we’re not biting each other’s heads off over something stupid like a bad
review.
