Ella Dark was driving at an illegal ninety miles per hour down the D.C.
freeway, her mind rampant with fresh troubles.
There are certain defining moments in a person’s life, Ella thought as
she whacked the radio down a notch. The day you’re born, the day you
reproduce, the day you find The One.
And the day you finally end a deathly rivalry with one of the most
heinous serial killers in United States history.
Today should have been the best day of her life. It should have been a
celebration of triumph over adversity. It should have been the birth of a new
dawn with nothing but exciting prospects on the horizon.
But Ella had made another mistake only hours after her hard-fought
victory. Her boyfriend, Ben—the man who’d stuck by her side over the past
few weeks, the man who’d fought Tobias Campbell alongside her—may not
have been the person he said he was.
Ben had been a beacon of hope in her life. He was a diamond in the
rough—positive, funny, caring, and understanding. Whatever she threw at
him, Ben threw it back with a smile. Their common ground was strangely
sparse, but they shared two things above all else: lives of perpetual
singledom and a bond forged through an enduring battle with a serial killer.
They shared common values, but their differences were varied enough to
make things interesting. She hadn’t wanted to draw Ben into her world of
abrupt chaos, but he’d been all too dedicated to seeing Ella through her
hardships.
They’d spent a few nights together sharing their life stories, and Ella
thought she knew his tale from top to bottom. Ben was twenty-nine years
old, a professional (albeit a relatively obscure) athlete, and he’d moved to
D.C. from Virginia four years ago. His story had been nondescript, by the
book, a textbook case of riding the waves of normalcy and simplicity. Ella
appreciated the lack of drama and baggage, and while she knew everyone
had a couple of skeletons, Ben’s closet only seemed to contain tight jeans
and an array of baseball caps. Nary a skeleton in sight.
But through some invasive thought, or perhaps a subconscious prompt,
she’d searched Ben’s name on the FBI database. She’d meant to search for
a different term, but Ben’s name had traveled from her reflections down to
her fingertips and a moment later, she was staring at the files of all
criminals named Ben Carter who’d been indicted on a federal crime in the
United States.
Her Ben Carter, the same Ben Carter who told her the only crime to his
name was a parking ticket (because he’d gotten lost on his way back from a
country run, apparently), was present on this list.
