the new guy
THE DOOR CREAKS OPEN, revealing an older white-haired woman.
She’s no taller than me, which isn’t saying much. She flashes a warm smile.
“Can I help you, dear?”
“Um, hi! I’m interested in the apartment you have for rent.” I point to
the “For Rent” sign attached to the front porch post. Printed underneath, in
small letters, is the word Haunted. “Is it still available?”
“Of course.” She opens the door to a dimly lit set of stairs with doors
leading off the main hallway. “Would you like to see it?”
“Right now? Wow. Yes, please.” I’ve tried to snag more apartments than
I can count in the French Quarter, only to find they’ve been rented before I
get there or are so far out of my price range that I’d need a job making over
six figures to afford it. Properties don’t stay on the market long, especially
on Royal Street, the heart of the antique district.
“It’s the first one on the right, up there. Number four.” She points to the
second floor, and I try to contain my excitement. The first door on the right
means there’s a balcony overlooking the street below. She pulls a key from
her apron pocket. “Bring it back when you’re finished.”
“Yes, ma’am. Thank you.” This woman doesn’t know me from Adam,
yet she’s letting me tour a vacant apartment on my own. “Are you sure you
don’t want to come with me?”
She laughs. “No, dear. I don’t do stairs. It’ll be fine. I trust you.” She
enters the apartment directly underneath the one I’m going to see, leaving
me alone in the dim entryway. I run my fingers along the carved woodwork
that lines the staircase. Thank God no one slapped a coat of white paint over
it through the years. The wallpaper looks original to what I’m guessing is a
house that was built at least a century ago. Faded yellow stripes, covered in
orange and turquoise flowers, are the victim to years of nicotine stains and
hands rubbing across the linen as people ascend and descend the stairs.
Don’t get your hopes up, Amelia, the voice of reason sings through my
mind. No doubt, this place is well out of a grad student’s budget. Even with
my weekend job as a barista, I don’t make enough to afford an apartment
like this. I reach the second-floor landing and head straight to apartment
number four. The skeleton key fits perfectly, clicking as the door opens with
a loud creak.
My breath catches as I look around the oversized, fully furnished room.
Soft pink wallpaper greets me in the main room that leads into a small
dining area. The furniture looks original to the house, and I’m instantly in
love. A pink tufted velvet couch sits against the wall opposite the balcony.
Wide-plank oak floors show years of use and are the host to a plush limegreen rug in the center of the room.
The furniture and decor throughout the rest of the apartment match the
aesthetic of the first room.
