3 years into Project Phase Two
THE BODY HAD BEEN DEAD FOR only one hour.
Fillion stared in horror, the bile churning in his gut. The deceased—a
man in his forties with a wife and three children—lay on an exam table in
the lab at New Eden Biospherics & Research. The eyeballs had bulged and
cracked. Blood dribbled from the ears and mouth. Vessels in the face had
popped, leaving a network of bluish lines across the unnaturally pale skin.
The pale skin common to New Eden residents. Fillion pressed his fingers to
his mouth, ready to throw up.

“This is the third death since yesterday,” Michael said. He looked at
Fillion from across the exam table.
Fillion whipped his gaze to the head scientist. “Third? Holy shit.”
“Stasis works with the general population; adverse effects are
extremely rare. Something in the genetic makeup of those inside New Eden
clashes with the therapeutic-torpor procedure, though. It almost doesn’t
make sense. Especially the cooling period seizures.” Michael lifted the
sheet over the man, the movements sorrowful and respectful despite the
clinical data he presented. “My theory is that the cellular structure in their
DNA is far more different than their Earthen counterparts than previously
believed. The limited space and depth, different diet, and atmosphere has
conditioned their senses. Basically, they’re highly sensitive.”
Michael touched his Cranium, brows pinched, before glancing
Fillion’s way. “The biochemists and physicians recalibrated for a new core
temperature and are ready to try again.”

“No.” Fillion backed away from the table. “No more blood on my
hands. Who gave permission for these tests?”
“Your father.” Michael swallowed and touched his Cranium, swiping
at invisible commands. “He delivered orders to continue until the stasis
tests pass viability.”

Blood pounded in Fillion’s ears. He tapped his fingers against his thigh
in an angry rhythm. “I veto his order. Human experimentation is no longer
allowed on N.E.T. premises. Is that understood?”
“I’m sorry, Mr. Nichols,” Michael said in a near whisper. “You’re not
the owner yet.”

“Were the test subjects from New Eden given a . . . choice?” Fillion
choked on the last word.

“They are property of the lab.” Michael pretended to study the
holographic chart. “The next subject is ready, Mr. Nichols.”
There was a long pause. Then Michael began speaking again. But the
only sounds Fillion could hear were the flood of thoughts screaming in his
head. Why were stasis tests even necessary? Nobody was going to Mars.
This was an experiment, not a mission. Hanley had, once again, put him in
a position of responsibility while granting him none of the power. Set up to
fail, always. Maybe he was the one who was really in suspended animation.
Wake up! he shouted over the screaming thoughts in his head. This wasn’t
the time to shut down. He needed to remain sharp.
The door slammed open, rattling the examination table; the dead man’s
hand fell over the edge.
