Meredith leaned her elbows on the desk and massaged her temples. She
needed this job, really needed it, but there was no way she could
complete all this work in the two months she had been contracted.
Not without working every waking hour, and that wasn’t happening, not
again. She had said goodbye to seventy-hour work weeks when her last job
had laid her off. It still stung, knowing how much work she had put it, and
then they tossed her aside so easily. But she was past it, and now she had a
new job. A job that apparently no one else has been doing for the past six
months.
She brought her arms down and leaned back in the chair. It was
ridiculous, how could they let it get into this state? Piles of papers littered the
desk, not to mention the boxes stacked in the empty office nearby.
A jingle came from her purse, and she tore her eyes away from the mess
and pulled her purse onto her lap. The phone had made its way to the very
bottom, as always, and she rummaged around before finally grasping the
smooth rounded edges. The screen was lit up, and a smile crossed her lips, it
was Rainie, of course it was.
“Hi, Rainie,” she said, glancing around the office, as she held it to her ear.
Not that it mattered, hers was the only desk in this area. Someone
conveniently placed it outside the CEO’s office, which was currently empty.
“Hey, I wanted to wish you good luck on your first day!”
Rainie’s voice buzzed with excitement, and she forced a cheery thank
you. Ugh, she hated first days.
Her eyes fell back down toward the clutter of paper, “And thanks again
for getting this job for me. I really owe you.”
Opportunities in Lakeboro were hard to come by, and after losing her
fancy job in the big city, employers weren’t exactly banging her door down
with offers.
“Oh, it was nothing.” Rainie brushed it off, as if finding a full-time job
was easy nowadays. “Ford needed help, and you needed a job, so it made
sense. I’m just sorry that you have to deal with my brother.” She laughed.
Her stomach twisted. Ford’s reputation was pretty well known around
town, a no-nonsense businessman who had a new girl on his arm every
weekend. Not that Rainie would say that, but the girls she worked with at
O’Malley’s had filled her in, in between serving tables and pouring drinks.
It wasn’t all his fault, not really. Ford was a Livingstone, and the
Livingstone family was wealthy and handsome. Their family’s construction
company had built hundreds of homes in town over the last few decades,
which meant all gossip about them traveled like wildfire in a town the size of
Lakeboro. If he had been an average joe at the supermarket, no one would
have even noticed what he was doing in his private life.
“I just hope he doesn’t hate me,” Meredith said.
“Of course he won’t, you’re going to be amazing. Plus, he needs you as
much as you need this job. So don’t let him make out he’s doing you a big
favor.”
