The Twins
Natalie walked into a dark room and flicked on a light switch.
She demanded, “Okay, Georgie, what on Earth are you doing in
here without me?”
What seemed like hours ago, her brother disappeared. Now the two
needed to leave. When Natalie found her brother, she was unprepared for
what she saw. In the light, her brother and another person clearly fumbled to
look as though they were not snogging like desperate teenagers. It was clear
what they were up to. George looked at his sister like a scared lamb. A
characteristic nervous red rash crept up his neck.
His friend stammered, “Um… it’s not…”
Too little, too late. Natalie was not fooled.
“No, no, stop. I don’t want to talk about it, Pat,” Natalie said. “There are
press out there. And everyone has left. So, whatever the fuck is going on
here—”
George pleaded, “Please, please do not be cross with me. Please do not
yell. Don’t go all off.”
“I’m not, Georgie. Give me a second. Let me pull it together in my
brain.”
He looked at her feet like a frightened puppy. Natalie wanted to tell him
it was okay. She wanted to tell him she was not cross. However, she was in
battle strategy mode and the train left the station. Natalie thought hard on
their next move. Her friend Marissa was outside the bedroom. Natalie
brought Marissa for her brother or his friend’s benefit. Joke was on her now.
“Alright,” Natalie was clear-headed as could be on four beers. “I know
what we shall do. No one fucking argue with me.”
George groaned. “Don’t row with her. It only makes it worse. It’s like
arguing with my mum. It’s… it’s a dreadful idea and everyone loses.”
Patrick nodded nervously, as if he could comply.
“Pat, come with me. I’ll go with you. Georgie, get cosy with Marissa
and don’t complain. She’s gorgeous and has legs up to her neck. Make it
look like you like her, even though I know you find her a bit much. We’re
going to get out of here and then we shall do a debrief back at Clarence
House. Alright?”
The boys nodded.
“Patrick, act like I’m your type for the love of God, not like you are
terrified of me!”
“I fear you. Can I say that?”
“Stop fearing me!”
“You’re just very… commanding?”
Natalie was not buying it. “Do you not fight men on the pitch? Last I
heard, you got a red card against Chelsea last game.”
“Since when do you follow football?” George asked.
“Since living in the damn mess and trying not to lose my mind. I am
swimming in men. The worst part? I cannot touch any of them,” Natalie
answered, exasperated. “What good are they? Well, that’s why I watch
football. It’s something to do.”
“You sound depressed,” Patrick said.
